Great job! Nothing to be ashamed of, especially for your first. I'm sure you've learned a lot about training, nutrition, and running over the last few months. Plenty to take away and bring with you to your next race!

    thanks!

yeah, one of the positives i took away from the race is that i know what i want to work on next time and how to do better so a goal of under 4-hours should be readily attainable with some minor tweaks.

this is definitely one of those scenarios where once you've done it you know so much more about it and how to plan for it. you can read books, articles, watch videos all you want, but until you experience the "oh god, 11 more miles" where you feel like you're in the middle of the ocean with no land in site (i.e. not close enough to the start or the finish line) it's only a guessing game. but having been there now, i definitely know what to expect, how to work past it and how to correct what i can correct.

I developed some pretty bad runners knee, but want to avoid seeing the doc. I'm gonna be off my feet for a few weeks with an unrelated issue. Do you guys have any stretches or remedies you use to treat it?

Congrats! Madison is such an unbelievably tough course. I ran my first marathon there in 2018 and was not ready for the hills in the back half!

    thanks!

im still not sure if there are more hills in the back half vs the front half or if it just feels that way because the back half hills hit you after 18+ miles haha but yeah, they did a number on me. And I live in a pretty flat city so that was my biggest concern. I tried to replicate hill work as best I could in training but would certainly focus on it more if I ever run Madison again

I remember reading about it during training and thinking it was interesting and hoping it wouldn’t happen to me but it appears I have “post-marathon blues”. I’m not depressed but I do feel like something is lacking now that the marathon is done and I’m recovering this week. The mix of nothing to look forward to + not really doing any physical activity has me feeling... I guess low? I know it’ll pass but it’s still wild to feel this way.

to hopefully alleviate that I signed up for the Milwaukee Marathon for April 2020 and my training plan for that starts around December 14th so I have a month to just enjoy running and other activities before getting on a schedule but idk I really enjoyed being on a schedule and being “told” what to do. Made life oddly easy haha.

anyone doing any thanksgiving races? i signed up for a half marathon a few months back with no real training plan in place. now its two weeks away and the longest run i've done is about 7 miles in the past few months.

    we'll see how it goes.

the only ones going on around me are at max a 10K (most are 5K) so i'm passing. no need to drive an hour + to only run six miles.

Being out of town is my favorite thing because I get to explore new trails or routes.

Theres a popular 10k Thanksgiving morning close to home that I've done once before; its fun. However, I tend to work until Midnight on Wednesday, then Thanksgiving day I work 1pm-10pm usually. So I don't get much sleep before the race. This year I have a beefy mountain 25k the Saturday before Thanksgiving that I'm going to be recovering from anyway so I'm totally sitting the 10k out.

This is pure ignorance on my part, but how does their treadmill at $4,500 differ significantly from a $1,500 NordicTrack? I was kicking the tires at turning my basement into a true "pain cave" by upgrading my indoor bike trainer and getting a treadmill but I think the costs are too high for me to justify right now.

you may have just saved me a lot of money lol

i kind of forgot about the NordicTrack. and while the website and design of their treads leaves a lot to be desired, in the video review i'm watching about the NordicTrack, i think what just won me over was this part:

"Use Google Maps tool, unique to iFit. You can go anywhere in the world using Google Maps. Plug in where you want to go, chart your own run, say you have an upcoming race - you can actually chart the full run and your treadmill will follow the route. Can view it like you would on the web and the incline on your treadmill will automatically adjust to meet the terrain incline."

    WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT

that's exactly what i want - more so than classes and stuff. I want to be able to recreate more challenging runs since I live in a very flat city. and since this is part of the iFit thing, it doesn't (i don't think) matter which version of the treadmill i get. soooooooo now i've gotta do more research into this because this may be the new route i take. that's so awesome. so now i could run mountains in Colorado and get the incline experience. or fucking ANYWHERE and get the actual incline experience and apparently go for as long as i want to (one of my concerns about the scenic runs on Peloton was if there was a time limit).

Hahaha I'm glad I could help! I was actually curious about the Peloton given how cultish the following is with respect to the bike. I don't know much about treadmills in general but was shocked at the price tag. I've been looking on FB marketplace and it seems you can get a NordicTrack for under $1,000 if you're patient and know what you're after.

I'm not sure how much treadmill running you do, but I'd recommend trying it out at the gym before buying. It can be a pretty different experience. Some swear by the treadmill but I absolutely hate it. More of a last resort and a "short runs only when it's cold or rainy" for me.

when i started running i would do exclusively treadmill running because i was too self conscious to run outside. i haven't touched one in years. absolutely abhor it now

  16. marsupial jones

i would choose to run outside 100 times out of 100, but if i want to stay consistent i have to get a treadmill because:

    1) i live in Wisconsin and the weather is shit for about 5-6 months out of the year
    2) i don't live near roads with sidewalks (on the edge of the city on country roads) so even if it is decent weather in winter, the shoulders are filled with snow / slush
    3) we have a Planet Fitness and... that's it. and their treadmills are awful. no other gym within 45 minutes.

so while i'm not a huge fan of treadmills, one that at least recreates the terrain of what i'm running and / or following a "coach" on a run through some super far away place seems a lot better than not running at all.

So I ended up buying the NordicTrack X22i today.

the ability to create any route you want on google maps and go and the tread automatically raises and lowers to the terrain. That’s fucking awesome and won me over on that alone.

I used to do cross-country and run very often, but it's been a few years now since then and I just stopped keeping up with it. I really wanna get back into it - any tips?

The easiest way for me to motivate and hold myself accountable is by signing up for a race and then training for it. If you're looking to just run more, pick a target like 5 miles a week and try to hold yourself accountable to that.

So, I’ve been thinking about this pretty heavily the last week or so, but I am definitely going to attempt to do the Moab 240 in 2021. I thought for sure it would have a bunch of requirements or restrictions to it but there aren’t! That’s awesome. As long as you’re crazy enough to pay for it all and move for 5 straight days you can do it.

And I really, really wanna do it.

where would i be if i was my brain Prestigious

Trying to figure out a training/ base building plan for myself. I’m gonna do a half-marathon in mid-January and I’d prefer to have fresh legs for that but not necessarily race-ready.

I’ve only hit 30MPW a few times since September other than race week two weeks ago. The plan I used was Hal Higdons one that called for running 5 days a week. I know I can handle 6 but I’m kinda specific on what days I can do speed/endurance/rest.

anyone have any advice or places I can look for more help or guidance?

so my NordicTrack arrived yesterday. fucker is HUGE. thank god i went with the 22" screen instead of the 32". i can't even imagine having a 32" screen a foot away from me on this thing. i don't think there is a brightness setting so i'll probably burn my eyes out in a week.

    OR NOT.

because of course, it turns out that this does rattle the floor and since i live on the 2nd floor, my neighbors below (and next to me - that must be because of the noise of the machine and me running) are not too pleased about it. i did a walking trail at 3.5 speed last night without issue. but today i started running at 6.5/7 (out of 10) and within a minute two different neighbors were banging away on walls and ceiling. so, great.

now i have to convince my parents to let me keep this at their house. luckily they live close to where i work but still. if they say yes i guess i'm gonna be seeing a lot more of them going forward.

took the plunge today and booked my flight, hotel and registration for the San Francisco Marathon on 7/26. my long journey to running a marathon in every state begins this summer!

everything all together was just under $1,000 so i think i made out ok. my hotel is only a few blocks from the start line which is a big plus and my biggest issue with navigating these things.

Big plunge! I dread the thought of signing up for an out of town race, hotel, flight, ect..... not knowing if i'll be healthy that far in advance. Sounds like a good trip planned. I like the idea of a marathon in each state. However that's too much asphalt for me haha.

That being said I signed up for a 50k in Virginia(Dam Yeti) in June. Going to drive as I've done the drive before and about to book the hotel; 50 mins from the start, but it was cheap but still good. Wasn't paying double for something a bit closer.

Haha that it definitely is! But super excited. I’d like to aim for 2-3 states a year but definitely don’t have an end completion date in mind, although I’m assuming I won’t be game for marathons out of state in my 70’s but who knows.

Yeah I’m a bit worried about the logistics of the whole thing but figured taking the plunge in a huge city would be interesting none the less. I’m more curious about how I’ll like running with 27,000+ people. My first (so far only) Marathon was a little under 3,000 and my marathon in April will be maybe 5,000 tops. If I hate the sardine-ness vibes I get from SF I’ll know to stick to smaller marathons. Or maybe I’ll like the large crowds, who knows.

I feel like my biggest issue will be any potential states where the airport is several hours from the city the race is in. I’ve been finding that when I was looking at races in Montana. I may just take off work for a few days and drive out for that (and SD, ND and NE) but I have plenty of time to figure that out.

Oddly enough I don’t worry about injuries. Running has made me weirdly positive (usually I’m more of a realistic / slight pessimist) and after being able to train for a marathon in 13 weeks and run a very hilly course in 4:09 I feel confident that I can get through training injury free (although I also understand that literally any wrong step can be a twisted ankle, bum knee, etc.)
