"I will lay awake, lie for fun, and fake the way I hold you"

This line gets me. Got out of a really bad relationship a while back. Hated it but was too attached to get out of it. Got to a point where I dreaded getting in bed at night because I would have to fall asleep with her. On a brighter note I'm now doing better than I ever was and karma is hitting her hard!

I've always meant to try that alternate track listing, so I'll give that a spin anyway.

Tough to discern between my "favorite" and their "best", but...

All the verses to Sowing Season, including the lines they ripped from Kipling.

    Chorus to Millstone

Well Jesus Christ, I'm alone again
So what did you do those three days you were dead?
Cause this problem's gonna last more than the weekend

I'll never have to buy adjacent plots of earth
We'll never have to rot together underneath dirt
I'll never have to lose my baby in the crowd
I should be laughing right now

The time has come for colds and overcoats
    We're quiet on the ride
we're all just waiting to get home
Another week away, my greatest fear
I need the smell of summer
I need its noises in my ears

The vessel groans the ocean pressures its frame
To the port I see the lighthouse through the sleet and the rain
And I wish for one more day to give my love and repay debts
But the morning finds our bodies washed up thirty miles west

    (This is the end)
This story's old but it goes on and on until we disappear,
    (This is the calm)
Calm me and let me taste the salt you breathed while you were underneath,
    (We are the risen)
I am the one who haunts your dreams of mountains sunk below the sea,
    (After the storm)
I spoke the words but never gave a thought of what they all could mean,
    (Rest in the deep)
I know that this is what you want, a funeral keeps both of us apart.
    (Washed up on the beach)
You know that you are not alone, I need you like water in my lungs.

Something dies when you grow older
But you do the best you can

    Chorus to Missing You

    Chorus to 1996

If there's any justice in heaven, then God won't let me in
He'll lock the gates and take my weekend pass away
With a sympathetic wave they'll see us off
Reserve my golden crown while I am cursed to walk the earth for millennia
I know I deserve worse, but it terrifies me and I can't take it anymore

And in the places you go
You'll find these people you know
All sewing patterns into clothing that you've called your own
    And in these smaller designs
There’s something larger you might find
That people’s hands have worked together to make up the parts of you

Still keeps the normal flow, but just changes the start / stop points, and much like their live shows, ending with You Won't Know is great.

    forbidden chalice.

The alternate tracklisting always felt similar to Deja to me. Leading with a musical intro, second song starts with the bass and has explosive choruses, and the third track has the foundation of an acoustic guitar.

Also, I always enjoy the alternate track listing until I get to Sowing Season. It feels so weird to hear it as a non-opener (shows excluded). A good way to switch up TDAG is treat it as two EPs, where the record is exactly the same, but You Won't Know closes EP1 and Welcome To Bangkok opens EP2.

Just curious, but the people that switch up the tracklisting, do you do that with all artists/albums? Or only with brand new?

Just ordered Deja on vinyl from P!MT because of these quotes. Its the only record I don't have from their catalog and yes, I remember my first listen very vividly as well. I received the pre-order CD with the cool black plastic sleeve over it from the record label. Put it on my dads BOSE speaker system and was completely caught off guard when the first notes of "Tautou" came through the speakers. Only had a burned copy of YFW from my younger sister that I had listened to maybe 3 times before.

Been putting off this purchase for years for no apparent reason, but these comments made today the day.

EDIT: I ended up giving that version of the CD over to a long term GF at the time of my Junior year of High School. We turned out not to be so great. Ugh. What a waste.

Sometimes I mix albums from different artists and call it one album.

Like, for example, I made "The Alchemy Index: Devil and God"

    just kidding

That sounds cool, although I would be concerned with people mistaking this as a pokemon. If you're ok with that, no problem I suppose.

Generally not. I've only actually only listened to Devil and God a couple times this way based on other comments I've read online. Typically I stick to the way the artist intended, but this one does seem to work nicely. Not nicely enough to re-number my files on my computer though.

Need someone to spell it out for me, what is the alternate track listing?

    1. Sowing Season
    2. Millstone
    3. Jesus
    4. Degausser
    5. Limousine (MS Rebridge)
    6. You Won't Know

    11. The Archers Bows Have Broken
    12. Handcuffs

Side question: Are we to assume that the (MS Rebridge) stands for Mike Sapone Rebridge? As in, Mike Sapone re-did something on the bridge of that song and they went with that? Think he included the explosions or something if I remember correctly.

Start with welcome to Bangkok and listen to the album in order (after handcuffs it goes into sowing season and continues in order) finally ending with you wont know

Edit: I think that's what they're talking about, I kind of fell behind in this thread

Just jumping in on the Daisy discussion from a page or two ago. Used to be my least favorite of theirs. But after seeing all 4 albums in full for the discography show, that was the album that absolutely stood out to me as being phenomenal live. Yes, the crowds don't get as into it as YFW or Deja or TDAG but in terms of a front to back play through I wouldn't mind seeing that set again.
