Kanye West - The Life of Pablo (February 14, 2016) Album • Page 22

  1. I know it doesn't excuse some of the other things he's said and done (including the "Famous" video, which I'm still unpacking), but it really bums me out that most of the people who spewed coded racism at him (citing this specifically as a way to justify it) aren't going to let up at all

I am very, very curious how Kanye haters are going to try to spin this. Attempting to speak from a completely non-biased point of view, I see zero ways you could defend Swift in this.

Swift been playing the poor white girl being bullied by a black man for so long and hardly anyone has said anything about it

You could defend her in the sense that she changed her mind and felt uncomfortable, or that she felt uncomfortable with the finished product or the added lines at the end of the quip. You couldn't really defend her actual defense of "I warned him" or "I said no", but those two points would still be valid.

With that said, I still hate the lines but I do agree this doesn't look good for Swift's defense and it does seem like a spin to turn on Kanye.

They why not come out and say she initially said yes but then changed her mind or didn't know about the added on lyric? She straight up played the victim. Say what you want about Kanye but he's unapologetically true to himself and Taylor is fake in every way possible.

I never said anything saying the opposite. Taylor's defense was absolutely fake and she absolutely did play the victim instead of saying something that could be construed as honest feelings about it. It doesn't make the lines less gross though and I hope people will still see that.

It's kind of wild how that narrative has turned. I remember after that moment happened everyone was calling her an angel and stuff and were just going so overboard on Kanye like I get what he did wasn't cool but he was vilified in an unnecessary way. I think now ppl are more evenly split or are at least "who cares?? It was the VMAS" about it. Also some ppl forget that the following year Taylor performed Innocent barefoot in a white dress while playing the clip of him interrupting her, but it was one of the most embarrassing things ever.

I don't like that Kim is re-instigating this or how she did it. On Snapchat? It's petty. It's "gotcha". And not only does it not contradict Taylor's original statement, but it's weird that they recorded what was supposed to be a friendly, well-intentioned personal phone call. But what good does starting this all again do? I'm sure Kanye and Kim believe they're in the right. But at this point, with the song out 5+ months, everyone's basically decided how they feel about it/who they believe/how much it matters to them. I think this is all bullshit, rich and famous adults being snipey and petty is so eyeroll inducing. And that's not a dig at people who are into celebrity stuff, it's just this specific incident has already played out, there's not really anything new here.

I don't care much for Taylor Swift's public persona. I like her music. I absolutely love Kanye's art, and still really think aspects of him are fascinating and admirable and valuable, but he's gotten to be really frustrating to reconcile. So I have no real leaning toward defending either side. Aspects of Taylor's relationship with Kanye are heavily problematic and get into uncomfortable racial territory, but so much of Kanye is so outwardly and proudly misogynistic at this point that it gets really muddy to try and defend him.

I don't like any of this. Ugh.

  13. People who vilify him also forget that he had recently lost his mother, apologized, and was unnecessarily chewed out on Leno for what happened

seriously, when I watch that clip and Leno asks him what his mom would think, it fucks me up

Seriously. Countless artists have videos of them in the studio, simply to record the process and experience. I'd be shocked if that was somehow the only footage they have of that time period

Don't most ppl let someone know they're gonna record them first tho? It's weird to do it without permission. idk I'm not famous enough yet to record my phone calls

It is a little weird that there is this sort of libidinal investment in destroying a woman's career. I mean, there is a critique to be made, particularly as it pertains to white femininity being used as a bludgeon against black men in particular, but the pleasure being derived from this is a little gross. If we are being rigorous about this, why not be as attentive to Kanye's claim that Bill Cosby is innocent? Accountability goes both ways, otherwise we are just permitting symbolic violence on a number of levels.

I think she should have been told, at least (if she wasn't). It's still a violation of her privacy, after all.

What state were they recording in and what state was she taking the phone call from? And if one of them is in a two party consent state and the other in a one party state then what's the legality? Someone get a lawyer in here

beachdude42 and Aaron Mook like this.
  25. Legally, in the states they're in -- it's required by law.
