    Assume It's A Bit

The "this isn't a comic book movie" argument has always been ridiculous because movies like this, Logan, Dark Knight etc. get paraded around as "transcending the genre" and are "real movies" but then the moment any amount of criticism is levied against them, those same people jump back to "yo chill out, it's a comic book movie it's SUPPOSED to be whatever"

I'm gonna reiterate my opinion that the best thing about this film is its remix of the Batman IP (including the Waynes' deaths), & w/out that aspect, this would be a quickly forgotten dud.

I haven't read this whole thread so I'm not sure if this has been brought up but I didn't see why this story had to be told through the context of the Joker. I also know nothing about comic books and I'm not sure if these exact events have happened in some story line I'm not aware of so maybe that is it. I did think this was super boring though.

It took me out of the movie every time I was reminded it was „the Joker Movie“. I would’ve preferred for it to be ... Not a superhero movie.

That was one of my least favorite parts because of the posts above. This movie should not be an origin story of the Joker set within the Batman world. It serves no purpose to the story (the same relevant plot points could have been hit just by renaming the characters) and it only ever took me out of the movie

It felt so tacked on it was jarring.

I thought the subtle ‘weaving in’ of the Batman world was perfect... More of this would serve well for DC films.

i like the idea that it occurs during the Joker incited riots. What a cool concept that is

Because otherwise Todd Phillips would get sued for xeroxing "The King of Comedy."

How much more subtle could it have really been?

I think maybe 10-12% of the film was inoculated with the “Batman World”.

It's not "set within the Batman world." But, it is set in a version of Batman's home, Gotham. That's the whole idea behind this film. Just like Red Son, Spider-Gwen, Gotham by Gaslight, Marvel 1602, 2099, etc... It's a recontextualization of an iconic visual, not meant to imply that this Bruce is literally Batman. It's a remix.

It's one of the only interesting decisions in this gosh awful fucking film, & the dorks who don't like it must not understand what makes superhero storytelling so fun at its best.

It's dumb and shouldn't have been part of the film

This version would be a great starting point for a mainline of films. It's already so much better than the other DC-film related releases (outside of the Nolan trilogy, of course).

A gritty brutal version of the Batman universe is already a proven success anyway. I would love to see it taken a step further.

I didn’t care that it was set in Gotham. I would forget and think it was in like Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver” New York City. Then they’d throw in something stupid like the Waynes getting murdered and it’s like “Ah yes. This is the universe it’s taking place in.”

What would be worse, a Snyder Batman film or a Philips Batman film?

Thank goodness we're getting a Batman film w/ nothing to do w/ either.

Also, I can't believe there are people who think this needed less Comic Book, considering how awful it got any time it pretended to be Serious Cinema instead, lol. Imagine how much more enjoyable the final product would've been had Philips stopped punching outside his weight class. Still not "good," but enjoyable.

Don't think anyone said anything about it "needing less Comic Book," just that the level of Comic Book we got was stupid / pointless / bad / didn't work / etc.

You’re right, “serious cinema” would have gotten standing ovations at film festivals and Oscar nods....

    wait.....

Those things don’t make something “serious cinema”. Bad movies get standing ovations at film festivals and Oscar nods constantly.
