You said "fuck with artists creation at scale"

I really don't understand how messing with the audio through an equalizer is less damaging to an artists creation than simply changing the playback speed.

 

He hasn't shown genius in years. That new album is hot trash.

 

kanye is no longer a genius. his music is subpar and his ideology is garbage. the man is gone.

 

this line of argumentation doesn't really hold up because your songs will inherently sound different on every pair of speakers or headphones. not to mention "natural reverb" from whatever room you're in etc.

if anything EQs can be and are used to compensate for that.

 

my favourite take from the past few pages has been the "brands are woke actually for letting people with adhd watch friends twice as fast and you're ableist because you think deaf people shouldn't be able to consume art even though you don't think that and didn't say that" one

but you use them to figure out what sounds good to you. which might not match what the artist intended. and that's okay. because what works for you is more important than what the artist intended.

 

I mostly agree with everything you said in this thread I just don't think this line of argumentation is valid

 

Then I don't know how I'm going to be able to explain it to you in a way that you will. I see a world of difference between changing the frequency of the bass to be a little heavier, or the treble more neutral, versus speeding up or slowing down the pitch. One pulls different elements out of the same song by what gets emphasis, the other fundamentally changes it. (And I'm against equalizers in general, or to be used as a tool to calibrate sound to a room, I prefer music to sound more neutral and, upon first listen especially, as intended by the artist, engineer, mixer, and master.)

I can’t believe we’re still talking about playback speeds, tho most people, me including, have switched gears to talking about talking about playback speeds

 

actually mastering engineers take that into account when mastering and know what their final product will sound like across a variety of speakers. altering that further is far beyond the engineers intentions

 

That edges out, “Watching a movie fast is an act of creation and maybe makes you a BETTER artist than the director,” for me. But it’s close.

Anyway, there’s no rich people in heaven, the toxic strand of ideology that allows preachers and I guess now Kanye to scam people for a fortune and then pretend it is a blessing is such a succinct expression of how capitalism and greed have warped the minds of so many in this country.
