It’s like the morons I had to deal with behind me when I first saw Midsommar.

Hereditary is one of my all time favorite films now, but my all-time worst theatre experience lol

Just got out of the theater and I’m speechless. That was phenomenal. That final shot holy shit

My shitty theaters bulb was burning out so the screen was softly flickering, it was really bad during the previews and they were trying to fix it but couldn't but honestly I think it added to the movie. Made our shitty digital projectors look like 35mm

    More gushing

Running out of alcohol and making it themselves with the lamp oil reminded me of The Master.
The Lantern opening was so fucking surreal, I almost expected Pattinson to climb inside and it would fly away. Also reminded me of Bioshock Infinite.
    Pattinson killing the gull.
"If I had a steak right now...I'd fuck it!"
The sound was insane. I had on headphones and cranked them fully. The mermaid/siren call legitimately frightened me, like physical chills/hair standing on end. The distorted screams from Pattinson at the end, that eerie horn that plays throughout the movie and the score were all incredible.
    Mermaid vagina.

I read somewhere that Pattinson’s direction was to play the Lantern scene as being so pleasurable that it’s terrifying

The lantern is/was on display at arclight hollywoo. It’s real cool in person. Kinda small

My friend and I saw this tonight - did not care for this at all. I loved The Witch, but this was just....I'm not sure. Immediate reaction was that it was just so slow going; I just kept waiting for some serious plot development, and nothing would come, or just little tiny tidbits of movement. Super tense and dark music, yet the images we saw on the screen didn't match that music. The weirdness of it all wasn't really a big factor for me; I just went into this thinking it'd be a much more engrossing film, but instead just left the theater with an immediate reaction of "Blehhh". Seems like a lot of people here absolutely love this film, and it has a high RT score, so it's for sure a style of film that really connects with certain people - but for me not so much.

Also, by far the loudest film I've ever seen.

Also, why were the dimensions of the screen square, and not the usual full screen? What was the purpose of that?

My immediate guess would be that it helps to emphasize the tension and claustrophobic feelings of being trapped in a tiny living space with a stranger on a remote island; also that the viewer themselves feel as uncomfortable as the characters when viewing through such a cramped aspect ratio

A lot of movies (First Reformed and A Ghost Story are the first to come to mind) are switching up aspect ratio lately, I dig it. Gives it a different look.

If you’ve ever been inside an actual old lighthouse like that, they’re pretty small/claustrophobic

Liked this, loved the sound design and the ending. I think slow burn movies just aren’t my thing between this and Ad Astra this year

Hmmmm yeah idk how I feel about this. Acting, set, brooding nature we’re all perfect. All the Siren/mermaid shots were perfect. Didn’t think I could ever be that unsettled by a mermaid. Though this was almost too dark for it’s own good.

Overall I liked it. I don’t think I’ve seen a horror movie with this kind of original setting in a loooong time.

Am I wrong in picking up a lot of homosexual themes? The shot of Pattinson looking at Dafoes ass, the “almost” kiss, almost looked like Pattinson was going to rape Dafoe at the end too. Thought it was interesting.
