Right? There's definitely a handful of names I shudder to see in writing credits. Hayslip is right up there among the worst. Absolute garbage. Ashley Gorely is another name that needs to be barred from music.

I'm so excited for that album haha. Maybe it's just me, but "East Coast Girl" really struck me as Fallon rubbing off on him ha. Maybe it's just the C - G - Am - F type chord progression that Fallon likes to use.

unrelated: I just realized the new DBT album doesn't have Wes Freed artwork and I'm not sure I know how to process that haha

Gorely's resume doesn't look quite as bad to me. At least there's a Will Hoge song on there.

New Butch is so fucking good. I have a lot of trouble ranking his albums, but it might be the most I've flat out enjoyed something from him in 10 years. As for Fallon rubbing off, I definitely think you can hear some influence from Ryan Adams, Frank Turner, and Brian on this record. He's not imitating any of them, but I think he took little bits of the records they made together and figured out how to use them to make his own material stronger.

woah, I never realized it before either. I'm hoping he does the liner notes at least, he is incredibly talented and adds so much to the releases.

Also, the BJ Barham solo song was great, I knew he was touring solo but didnt realize he was doing a solo album. I know AA had talked of breaking up when Burn.Flicker.Fade.Die came out, hopefully that is not the case.

I really liked the new song by barham, and there is another new song on Spotify that is solid. I've never been blown away by American aquarium, but always enjoyed them for the most part. So far though this album is showing a lot of promise though.

For anyone who likes 90's traditional country, Mark Chessnut just dropped a VERY good album.

I saw him live last month and it was an incredible experience. Haven't been moved by a show like that in a long long time.

damn I really want to see him, not too big of a fan of his newer stuff though. But his performances seem really good.

It was my first time seeing him, but i have heard the live stuff and it sounds very similar. He doesn't go by a setlist he said, just yell out songs and he will paly them and whatever he feels like at the moment. Still acting very much possessed on stage.

Can anyone recommend me some albums that sound like....the best way I can describe it I guess is "country noir". Music by wise and weary artists who has lived an interesting life in rural or desert areas and seen some crazy things along the way. The musical equivalent of movies like Blood Simple, True Detective, Blue Ruin, No Country for Old Men, etc. I know Johnny Cash (or at least his persona) have written about some stuff like that, but I'm not really into the really country sounding stuff. Best example of the sound I'm looking for is "Country Funk" or "Country Rock" I guess. I got these albums:

and love how groovy/bluesy/rocky/funky they are, much more listenable than the traditional slide guitar and redneck stuff, and thought it would be really rad to hear some thrilling stories from the rural western parts of the country about corrupt cops, scary barroom parties, drug deals, stories of bodies disappearing, encounters with hitchhikers, sharks and marks and all that stuff. What quality albums that consistently sound like that and explore those themes are out there?

Yeah, there's some decent ones at least. I still need to listen to the latest Will Hoge, I remember spinning it once and mostly enjoying it but not nearly as much as his previous records. I'm also coming around a lot lately on the new Jon Pardi. At first I wasn't feeling it but it's grown on me a lot. Only song I can say I don't care for is "Dirt on My Boots", but even then it's kind of okay. Certainly not as bad as it could've been. I guess I just had reservations at first about the fact that he (apparently?) doesn't play guitar on the record at all and most of the writing was done by outside sources or collaborators, but in the end I guess I don't care all that much.

I'm really glad to hear it's so good, haha. Granted I wasn't expecting much less, but still, good to know. At any rate, it's good to see his recent list of clients skewing more toward Ryan/Fallon/Turner etc and less Avril/Seether/etc ha. Now, if we could get Butch to produce a Will Hoge record, that'd be something...

For sure. I've always thought his style perfectly complimented DBT's sound, so it's kinda surreal that they're not working with him again. Still need to listen to that new BJ Barham song, I completely forgot he even has a solo album coming out, hah. Been a while since I listened to American Aquarium.

Oh and uh, I just discovered Dierks Bentley's "Up on the Ridge" and...what the fuck. This guy is recording shit like "Somewhere on a Beach" when he's got albums like that in him? Jesus. Please break up with Nashville, dude.

Dierks is a casualty of the Nashville machine, like so many others. Incredible talent but forced to record a lot of horseshit songs.

Seriously. Which to me is even more infuriating than someone like Luke Bryan or Cole Swindell because at least there's nothing going to wast there, just more pre-fab, manufactured, processed garbage. Let's hope Bentley leaves Music Row behind someday soon. Not sure it's ever gonna happen but one can hope.

Also, lol @ autocorrect changing "Swindell" to "Swindle". So fitting.

Believe it or not, Bryan and the others can actually write good songs. They are usually buried in their albums, or co-writes for non mainstream artists. This is the case all over Nashville. Jarrod Neuman(sp?) and a few other mainstream guys wrote a song on that new Mark Chessnut album I posted about that is really good. The problem is the labels won't them record those songs, so those guys write the absolute crap they know will sell.

On one hand, they have to feed their family, I get it. But the infuriating part is that they KNOW better. They have the talent to write great songs, and have done it. Yet they choose to go the sell out route.

Man, this Steven Tyler album is all over the fucking place. And not really in a good way, ha. There's some decent tracks and some interesting ideas but it's all so disheveled that it's almost jarring. Like, "Hold On" almost sounds like a fucking Mark Lanegan b-side, and then "Red White and You" is a turd avalanche that sounds like the worst of the worst pop-country has to offer.

Props for at least being ambitious, I guess. I don't hate it (barring a few truly awful songs) but I doubt I'll ever really listen to it again. I guess it's just a little embarrassing when a 68 year old man is recording shit like "Red White and You". Which, don't even get me started on those goddamn lyrics. Christ.

"Hold On" is still cool though.

Not to say Butch wasn't always creative, but I think working with those three in such close proximity really sparked something in him.

The latest Will Hoge record is more "mainstream," but it's still really good imo. Vocally, he's a cut above pretty much everyone else for me, so that sells even his less interesting songs.

The Pardi album is fine. I haven't gone back to it that much. And yeah, "Dirt on My Boots" is pretty bad. He's a nice return to a more traditional sound within the mainstream, but that's still a pretty risk-free record. I guess I don't get that much personality out of him as a performer.

Butch working with Avril and Pink was fine, but yeah, he's been on a role lately. I hope he gets a rain check with Ryan and gets to produce one of his records. He was supposed to produce the self-titled record, but opted out after his dad passed away. I doubt he'll ever work with Avril again after the whole Dr. Luke thing. Butch producing a Will Hoge record would be dynamite though. They've got the same birthday, they should obviously be friends! I think Butch could help Will get back some of his rock sound, since clearly he's not getting the exposure he wants chasing mainstream country.

Haha, haven't been brave enough to listen to that one yet.

I think working with them just helped him to figure out what he wanted to do next. Afraid of Ghosts was completely different from his other work, and very introspective and personal obviously. And then the tour after that was all downbeat and sad stuff. I think coming out of that and having Frank's record drop, and then going into the studio and recording with Brian, helped him close that chapter and start envisioning something positive again.

Speaking of missed chances with Ryan Adams,I would love for Ryan to get a chance to produce Jason Isbell. He was supposed to do Southeastern and even did a few tracks before bowing out I believe.

Could you imagine a collab album between Adams, Isbell, Fallon, and Walker? Traveling Willburys style.
