I don't get it either. Honestly it's like, Dragon Quest doesn't really have any outright bad games, but also that's because they're pretty much all very safe, very same-y kinds of games (with the exception of like IX, I suppose). Final Fantasy takes bigger swings and doesn't always hit the mark, but each game has a unique identity that sets it apart from all the others yet still feels like it belongs in the same franchise. Personally, I like the risks that franchise takes, even if they don't always work out as well as the developers probably hoped.

there is a fast travel! you unlock it pretty early in the game while making upgrades to the camp. i think it's easy to miss though if you're not interested in doing that because upgrading the camp is not vital to the story at all.

I love exploring in games but man, going to the same couple of areas for a large portion in the game can get grating after a bit. But some of the best bits in games are when you just really explore though.

 

The recruiting agency that got me this job just called to say they're having trouble reaching a couple of my references. For one thing I don't know why they're doing this after I've started work. But also that got me thinking about how none of my references are people I've talked to within recent years and I really don't like the idea of people calling my former supervisors and coworkers and asking about me and I'm not sure what the purpose is??
