Joker (Todd Phillips, October 4, 2019) Movie • Page 34

Discussion in 'Entertainment Forum' started by iCarly Rae Jepsen, Apr 2, 2019.

  1. This movie is maybe the strongest argument I’ve ever seen for why movies should have trigger warnings but it’s also a fantastic movie with the clear frontrunner performance for best actor. It has some screenplay issues (like the locker room scene where everyone but Arthur has a very hard time connecting ”someone dressed as a clown and killed 3 guys yesterday” and “Arthur, a clown, was caught with a gun yesterday”) but it won me over. It’s not for everyone and I understand hating it but this is very clearly a huge milestone for Comic Book Movies.

But if you consider this joker to be an early version to TDK joker, as in they are on the same time line, wouldn't you expect the "rookie" joker to be more rough around the edges while starting out?

100%, I’m doing very well with my mental health at the moment but this movie would not have been a good thing for me to watch in high school

I don’t consider this Joker to be an early version of the Dark Knight Joker

Yeah I thought this was great. Loved seeing little Bruce slide down the pole at the playground. Fun little nod.

The entire talk show sequence was amazing.

This felt like a major overcorrection from Leto’s joker. There should be some theatricality to joker’s crimes. It’s not interesting for him to just be a sad guy who goes on a murder spree with a gun.

Also I was skeptical about the “danger” of the movie but it 100% lived up to the press about it. Ending of the movie feels like it’s saying if you pull off some act of infamy, you’ll finally find your crowd.

Phoenix was phenomenal in this. He really gave it his all. Thought the bit in the streets after the talk show was a bit iffy but the rest of it was great.

I do wonder how much of the film was actually happening and how much was Flecks delusions. I kind of feel like Fleck getting in to the fridge may have been the final genuine action and that the rest of the movie was him living out an altered version of his fantasy of having a connection with Murray, edited to reflect his changing attitude towards the super rich.

I agree about the trigger warning, especially given today's climate. That said, what a film. I just got out of my second viewing. I love how the ambiguity can work on multiple levels. Arthur could've imagined all of it, none of it (well, save for the pretty obviously imaginary Sophie scenes), or something in the middle. Maybe he died in the freezer. Maybe in the car crash. Maybe not at all. I hope they never actually give us an answer or another film with this version of the characterb ecause I don't think we need either.

The most twisted thing that happened is AMC fucked up and played two Knives Out trailers 10 minutes apart, well that and being a dick to Paper Boi
I didn't hate this but still feel the whole Patton Oswalt I don't care where these monsters came from, even if this is non canonical still
I know it's because Scorcese but just making Gotham NYC was distracting, do they have Broadway Sondheim canonically exists as well as Brian De Palma
Joaquin was good but him getting method is as funny as Leto going method
I don't think Phillips totally failed but he didn't really say anything, he probably sides with the cops

The film being all in Arthur's head makes sense considering all the times that he does things that would warrant someone calling the cops on him but gets away without any real consequences. Events just happen because they need to happen for the sake of the plot.

I have mixed feelings on the film as a whole. I really liked a lot of things about it but it left me cold in the end. It was an interesting, beautifully made mess.

This film made me depressed. It’s void of any hope and I could not be entertained by it.

  14. Lol that happened at my screening too! I asked my friend if we had just seen a trailer for this already and he said he didn’t think so, so I figured I imagined it or mistook something for Knives Out earlier

We got a “teaser” for the Knives Out trailer that said to look out for the trailer coming up. Then the real trailer came on after like two other trailers. It was super strange

When I saw Godzilla they showed two Dark Phoenix trailers and I wanted to die.

I’d like to think they’re just trolling the anti-Last Jedi nerds with two “Knives Out” trailers. That’s a real Joker move there!

My theater got Rise of Skywalker.

My main gripe with this film is that it continuously feeds cynicism to the audience but doesn’t tell us why. The film just drops it on us numerous times and expects us to just take it. It’s completely vein. It’s shock value and misery porn.

I'm really surprised by the Birds of Prey trailer response. I know it's basically a Harley Quinn movie but I thought the tone was perfect.

I'm more interested in seeing Harley reclaim her independence after the Joker's abuse than I was in seeing another movie about a loner white guy pushed to the edge by society.

Considering her solo comics run, it's not as funny of an idea as it sounds.
