Basically. The Cubs window should have been longer than it was. Theo's not blameless because you can't go into the year expecting guys like Almora, Bote and Descalso to be everyday players. Maddon's given the impression that he wants to leave because the Cubs are kind of stuck where they are. At least that's the vibe he's given off since July or so. They didn't really do much to get better until they got Castellanos and I have to imagine that's frustrating from a coaching standpoint. I get that they have a lot of money tied up in their aging pitching staff, but still. Almost everyone in the division improved and the Cubs just seemed to think they were good enough as they were.

Yeah I agree. They really didn't seem to have a plan except hoping that everyone looked more like the 2016/17 versions of themselves. I laughed pretty hard when they picked up Descalso. Love the guy but he was a utility spot starter at best with us a few yrs ago (although Matheny idiotically liked to use him as more).

Would be huge for them if they could keep Castellanos. Darvish seems to have turned a corner but who knows if that holds out next year. Another player they have money locked in that's been a bust that people tend to forget about is J-Hey. He was better this year sure but he hasn't been the player he was pre-2016 again since going to Chicago.

It's Cincinnati's division next year anyway.

 

Yeah, Heyward’s been a mediocre hitter for a couple years now. His fielding made him valuable to a point but even that has fallen off this year. I am terrified that the Brewers might be in a similar situation with Cain if this year wasn’t an aberration.
