I just barely left TGA off my top 10 (American Slang is probably the one I'd put on) but hot damn if they/Brian don't have my favorite discography of the decade. I'm in agreement with all your top tracks too (minus "She Lovers You", I could never get into that. And I looooove "Boxer").

that's great to hear. I consider the standard version to be the record. the deluxe pretty much just adds some transitional scenery which is cool but not essential

I’ve always loved the picture Brian paints in that song that goes along with its music. American Slang the album gives you a driving, bouncing, grooving feel. She Loves You is like the walk home at night after a busy day with friends. It’s set to a familiar romantic concept of Romeo and Juliet, but paints the pictures of New York City alleys, a rainy night, steam coming up from storm drain vents.

I said I’m a big fan of Horrible Crowes, and She Loves You captures what would be that “Night time” music sound that was Elsie. I’d also through Blue Jeans and White T Shirts and Backseat as pre Crowes nighttime music.

All of American Slang is great and Brian/Gaslight/Crowes are definitely my band of the decade.

I mean, the lists are all arbitrary to begin with. I think it'd be super boring for Bon Iver to take up 3 spots of my top 10 when an artist that not many people have heard of like German Error Message could wind up getting bumped

zmtr, SpyKi, Mary V and 3 others like this.

I get that, but they’re also representations of personal taste. Like, I’m putting both Julien Baker records in my top 5 because they both individually mean that much to me and to leave them out just to highlight a different artist would be disingenuous.

  21. That's fair. Use whatever system you'd like, really. There doesn't have to be just one way of doing things

  22. ImAMetaphor

Yeah! I’m down for whatever people want to do. Ranked, alphabetical, one album per artist, multiple albums per artist, whatever works. I just personally can’t imagine making a list meant to represent my favorite music of the decade without including, like, Pure Heroine and Melodrama together, ha

  23. Matt Chylak

I can always be better, so I'll always try. Supporter

IMO there's really two main reasons to do this project: introspection and recommendation. If you care more about creating an accurate picture of the albums that arbitrarily at this moment in your life meant the most to you over the last ten years, it probably makes more sense to stick to whatever you feel is the best representation of your taste, even if that's 10 albums by 4 artists. It's basically a diary entry or a time capsule.

On the other hand, if I see like 3 albums by 1 artist on someone's top 10 of the decade list, I'm going to think "wow, that person has an immensely special relationship with that artist", but it's a more difficult entry point without further discussion. Personally, as fun as it can be to rank things, I think accessibility is important if you're interested in helping someone find an album that might change their life. Which, when we're talking about personal top albums of the decade, isn't an inconceivable goal.

I like how some folks in here grouped multiple albums by an artist into one "entry", which feels like a nice way to split the difference.

i just included the albums i liked the most. it seemed more silly to try to limit anything about the list in an effort to include more artists when i like their albums less than ones by artists who maybe have multiple entries on the list. but it’s just a list that like a dozen people will look at, who gives a shit, live your life
