Which of the two Beach House records? I've seen their name thrown around so I want to check them out but I noticed they released two albums that year.

A couple years ago, I realized I didn't like the direction I was going with records - I didn't like listening to quantity over quality, or that music wasn't becoming part of the soundtrack of my life like it used to. Like y'all, I was streaming a ton of different stuff and not investing time like I used to (my first favorite band was Weezer, and I know their first three records note for note, because I just listened over and over every day). I missed that.

So, I stopped streaming. I went back to the way it was and just invested, personally, into music I loved. And honestly, I'm happier for it. I don't always keep up with stuff that other people do, but I just figure if it's good, it's worth revisiting. From that became the realization of my 'Mount Rushmore' that I wanted to be part of my every day/constant life (JEW, MCS, Gaslight, ManOrch), and I've listened to their records as much as I did Weezer as a kid. And then I've also grown to love other records that don't have an immediate oomph, but by forcing myself to come back to them, I find myself falling in love. Two of my most played albums of the last year ('Peace and Light' by Muscle and Bone and 'Shame' by Petal) took a dozen listens to really click, but once they did, they became hugely important albums to me. A few years ago, I would have listened, said 'ok cool' and moved on; now, I've fallen in love completely and I don't regret it at all.

At the end of the day, I guess I just missed the relationship to music I had in a pre-streaming world, and I just decided to go back. And I've been able to invest and connect with albums at 30, 31 and 32 like I did when I was 14, 15 and 16. It's been pretty awesome.

I've definitely ramped up the quantity in recent years, but I don't really feel like I haven't been immersing myself in my favorite albums or anything. I mean, my albums of the year for the past three or four years have been pretty heavy shit, emotionally, so they wouldn't ever be "play every day" albums for me anyway. I've especially been listening to a lot of new stuff since last year, when I started getting really into country and Americana and looking for new, up-and-coming artists in those genres. If there's something I spend less time with because of that, it's definitely not the artists or albums I love most; it's the super critically acclaimed stuff. It used to be that, if I wasn't loving the "consensus favorites" of the year, I would spend a lot of time "trying" to like them. I definitely don't do that anymore.

Yeah I've been listening to a lot more for the past few years, haven't been listening to too much this year though, but I still manage to give my favourites a good amount of time even if they don't quite hit the number of plays they would have 10 years ago. I don't think I'd be able to stand listening to them that much anymore though. I still know every word and note to the new 1975 album or HLNPIT. Sometimes I don't get to listen to some things as much as I'd like but they're usually things I wouldn't have listened to at all if I didn't check out as much music so I feel fine about it. The stuff that hits me the most are things I'll come back to at some point anyway.

I've kind of started to care less about keeping up with all the new stuff coming out. I'm still interested obviously, but at this point I do way more just searching for things that are new to me that I'll like, whether the album came out 20 years ago or 2 weeks ago.

This year I've been posting in the "2016 Albums" thread and I've listened to more new albums/artists than I ever have before. I've barely listened to any old stuff because I'm so focused on new music. It's been a fun experience in that I feel like I've discovered loads of new artists and broadened my music tastes a little, but it's an exhausting process too. I have no idea how some people in that thread have already listened to upwards of 200 new albums. I can only imagine that they aren't revisiting many of them. I'm thinking that I'll continue this process until the end of the year but I can definitely see myself not bothering with the inevitable "2017 Albums" thread and going back to my old music listening habits which basically consisted of enjoying the artists already in my iTunes library, and checking out any new releases they have, as well as occasionally discovering new artists throughout the year (I'd say an average of 10-15 per year). Maybe after a year off, I'll be ready for the "2018 Albums" thread.

On the plus side, I've discovered a whole ton of new artists with all the great records that have been released so far in 2016, so I'll no doubt spend at least some of my time in 2017 diving further into their discographies.

Yep, it has benefits and drawbacks. I really got into listening to a ton of albums last year when I started making a list and challenged myself to listen to as much as I could. I think last year I was over 250 albums for the year, but I won't be close to that this year.

I've listened to 58 new albums so far, aiming to get to at least 100 by the end of the year. Maybe 120 if I'm feeling ambitious, haha.

Yeah, maybe if I consciously try to slow down and only listen to things I think I have a good chance of enjoying, that'll help me spend more time with albums in general. Then again, with that mindset I could also miss out on finding something I love unexpectedly, so it's hard to really know how to approach it. I've listened to around 98 this year, I think.

been trying to put together what I think would be a good post-clarity b-sides comp. it'd feel more complete if I had a proper MP3 of "jen" or the studio version of "anais" (which tbh I've never heard and sometimes doubt exists bc it's nowhere on the internet) but it's shaking out like this:

    1. step one
    2. open bar reception
    3. (splash) turn twist
    4. be sensible
    5. when i want
    6. shame

    9. no sensitivity

Yeah this is it for me. My most listened to records this year are a live Katie Herzig album from 2010, Julien Baker's from last year, and the Brian Fallon release. That makes me 1 for 3 on this year. I've listened to 15-20 releases this year, but honestly, I sorta reached the point where discovering new nuances to my already favorite music is as satisfying as discovering new music.
