If I could just forget it

After spending some more time with the album I take this back, it's pretty great from front to back.

Those are all fair points, and I don't disagree with any of it. I also don't want to be naive and pretend there wasn't an inkling of industry involvement at the start of her career. It truly does just seem odd to pick that piece as a target of all things. I don't want to excuse it. I'm just trying to empathize with why she might have reacted that way, if for no other reasons than selfish ones. No artist is above criticism (which feels like a strange word to even really use here), and shouldn't behave as such, especially when they're on a level of success as someone like her.

  3. It clearly touched a nerve, I just... wish it hadn't come out this way. It shouldn't, but it makes me feel less friendly towards the new album and I haven't even had a chance to listen to it yet. Sigh.

Ya I feel you, and I can’t blame you.

But if/when you do get around to listening.. I can’t imagine another album topping it for me this year.

  5. Between Taylor and the Maine, there's very little chance it'll be my AOTY *but* doesn't mean it can't be a favorite. I've never connected with Lana before so I'm excited to try.

The Maine and Taylor are sitting at 2 & 3 so I can't be mad about that!

I really really really don't understand this The Maine resurgence, I feel alone on it but it's actual really bizarre to me. But I suppose that's not for this thread haha

  8. It's a great album Steve, and I'm happy to discuss it with you over there in that thread lmao

(also don't call it a resurgence, I've been here for years)

It’s not a resurgence for me either I became a huge fan in 2011 and I have been ever since. I’m ready to fight on this, whichever thread you choose

I agree. It’s not bad but I don’t get the immense praise, I really don’t even see why but oh well as long as others are happy

  16. Imagine being a fan of an artist to the extent that you think criticism in a LARGELY POSITIVE REVIEW is worthy of attacking the person who wrote it. jesus fucking christ.

like when lizzo did it i was upset but it was at least at a somewhat negative review and even though it was her third record her public star had blown up in the interim, lotta pressure, i get it

this is lana del rey's fifth fucking album and this is the best press she's ever gotten. and i don't agree with every choice that ann powers piece makes but it is a massively generous and inventive and full-of-ideas piece to have attached to your fucking album.

    like fuck you

    I love the record

I’m annoyed by her overreaction to good press (still strange).

That being said, if this gets really petty and this gets the record knocked way down album of the year lists...that’s equally as petty.

i sincerely doubt anyone will give a shit about this next week. i am mad for a lot of good reasons but it's also sort of personal bc ann is a colleague and a friend

I can understand someone seeing a persona as a negative thing because it can come across unauthentic (I guess?), and she thinks it makes her music come off that way too. It seemed heavily there during the Born to Die cycle, at least with the whole classic look she was going for. She dropped that when Ultraviolence came out though and it hasn't really felt like she was playing any kind of character since, imo. Her reaction was definitely uncalled for and hopefully it's something she can grow from.
