Now I want the Cowboys to win the SB this year. Just to prove to you, @socklord, @CarpetElf and everyone else that POWER FOOTBALL is still alive and the spread offense is not the only fucking way to win just because that’s what teams with elite QBs do. Lol.

Any team that does not have an elite QB is doing themselves a favor by focusing on winning mostly in the trenches. Imo only elite QBs can truly handle the pressure of having to decide quickly between 4-5 reads without a power rushing attack distracting the defense.

THIS god damn @EntryLevelDave you are so pretentious most the time lol

If you rooted for ANY other team you wouldn’t have such a ridiculous bar set for whether you think a team is good or not. And you would realize that the Patriots offense / strategy is something that 28-30 of the 32 teams couldn’t even successfully imitate if they tried.

Am I thrilled with the Jags not making a Super Bowl? No, but honestly any season that gives me hope is worthwhile and makes me happy with my team and I honestly think you can be a huge party pooper by discrediting that.

Anyone who didn’t root for the Patriots would just be huge masochists if they thought like you thought, “all or nothing”. Finishing the season as a top 10 team still provides a lot of excitement and suspense and makes football worth watching and rooting for. No one REALLY knows what’s going to happen, you can’t fault a Cowboys fan for believing their team can break the curse with this talent.

Being super bowl favorites every year is exhausting as a Pats fan, the Matt Cassel year was a ton of fun and one of my favorites to watch.

Yeah....I've held this belief since before the Patriots were a dynasty. I'm sorry you find it pretentious, but the idea that there are moral victories in a sport is kinda silly to me. Did you win the championship? No? K...what are you gonna do to fix that? The Red Sox were one pitch away from the World Series in 2003, was I supposed to say good job/good effort, or was i supposed to be pissed that the manager completely fucking blew it?

And if you read further before hitting me with your paragraph, you would have seen what I was defining as "okay." It wasn't the Saints, who have at least won a Super Bowl. It's teams like the Bengals who for a period of time were always "okay" and in the playoffs but never did much of anything. What fun is that? Who's going to remember anything about those teams 5 years from now?

This might be the most fun counter-factual in the NFL in this decade. 49ers complete that comeback and win, and the NFL looks very different. Suddenly Kaep is a SB winner signing a big deal with his resigned coach...maybe he never takes the social justice stands he did. Or more interestingly, he still does but as a major face of the league. In Harbaugh we get an NFC version of a Belichick who might build a dynasty that changes how a lot of the NFC goes...certainly the NFC West. The Ray Rice situation may have gone differently, and John Harbaugh might not have survived that scenario.

Instead, we got "iS joE FlaCco eLiTe!?"

And you'll notice i'm not talking about evaluating individual players based on their ring-count. I get that it's not Dan Marino's fault that he never got one. But to say it's not the ultimate measuring stick of a team's success is frankly laughable. What is then?

Like...tell me this. If the Bills win those 4 Super Bowls in a row, aren't we talking about one of the ultimate franchises in the NFL? Instead, we talk about guys jumping through tables and Rex Ryan's glow up.

I really don't think things would be that different with SF or BAL. I don't think Flacco wouldn't be offered the deal he got if he didn't win the Super Bowl, that playoff run was still ridiculous. And I think San Francisco would've still made many of the decisions they did. I feel like the only thing that would be different is that Kaepernick would have started for the 49ers longer due to his longer leash and if he got released he would end up on another team for sure. That ring changes a lot of things for better or for worse.

But also maybe that changes the confidence of Michael Crabtree and we never have the Richard Sherman explosion and my grandma is still willing to watch football with me.

You also keep confusing "their quarterback isn't great in a quarterback-driven league" with "Why don't they just do what the Patriots do" and it's weird.

If there’s no moral victories in sports then what the fuck are 28 teams’ fans doing watching when it’s only 3-4 teams good enough per year to win it all?

Obviously that’s a wrong assertion Dave. No one would have loyalty to their teams otherwise. Any progress / improvement is a good feeling even if you’re not automatically a top 2 team in the league.

The reason the Bengals were so disappointing is because there was no progress, they remained in purgatory, their ceiling had been reached but they were unwilling to rebuild. I think that’s actually a very rare situation as most teams force their roster to have more turnover than that when they aren’t getting improved results.

There's a big difference between enjoying a season as it happens and rooting for a team, and looking back at teams/dynasties historically

    I agree with Dave

That’s like saying “what’s the point of listening to or playing music that isn’t ever gonna win a Grammy?” Bitch, I like my Jags even if they never win a SB my whole life, gtfo & let people enjoy things lol

...You can measure your progress and growth and enjoy it and be optimistic about what it can lead to without pretending you've accomplished the ultimate goal. I don't get what's so hard about that concept.
