The teenage girl who gave me the key to my Airbnb in Oxford was blaring this album upstairs all yesterday afternoon after I checked in and I wasn’t even mad.

“Love” is an all-timer and would be a universally recognized song if it was released in like 1951.

I think the middle of the album drags, which might have stopped you from paying attention later, but the last 4 song run of “Tomorrow Never Came” —> “Get Free” is as good as anything in her discography and reach the anthemic status that she’s been searching for her whole career.

Love -> Cherry is wonderful. 13 Beaches is a fav of mine. Has that classic Lana cinematic feel. Groupie Love, Tomorrow Never Came, and Change are standouts as well.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

great rating and all but the album deserved a better review - like

"“The greatest” is a galaxy-brain moment in the pantheon of pop, and it belongs to a generation fully aware we are at risk of being distracted into oblivion, Juuling towards early death while watching Earth burn."

Yeah, the review itself is pretty unfortunate, but this album absolutely deserves that score.

    hey you lil piss baby

    Fun facts:

Highest score for a new release since D’Angelo in 2014

Only 5 new releases have been scored higher this decade (Yeezus, Channel Orange, GKMC, Bon Iver, MBDTF, all 9.5 except MBDTF with a 10)

All those records are phenomenal and we can’t get a good high quality vinyl pressing of any of them. A damn travesty.they either sound like shit on vinyl (BI, Jagjaguwar has always seemed to skimp big time here), mediocre (GKMC, MBDTF) or they’ve never even been pressed (CO and Yeezus).

I got this coming on vinyl so hopefully it’s sounds as good as it deserves to.

ya maybe the FJM vibes on this are partially why I'm not in love with it as I'm first listening. Venice Bitch is the standout so far, but it goes on for too long imho

I don't think we should be making her out to be some kind of feminist icon. She makes nice music but let's not forget that she's a complete fucking idiot who had to be forced into doing the bare minimum (i.e. not performing in Israel) to show solidarity with the Palestinian people:

Lana Del Rey Defends Israel Performance: ‘Music Is Universal’

And more recently she said, "I’m really not more of a liberal than I am a Republican — I’m in the middle". All the harm the Republican party are doing right now (and have done historically) and this is her response. It's gross. A charitable view is that she's so rich and privileged that she doesn't feel she has to take a stand on any of these issues because they don't affect her. A less charitable guess is that she actually agrees with some of the Republican platform. Just makes me uncomfortable to see folks holding her up as some kind of "yaaasss queen" figure when she really isn't.

I don't think anyone here is making her out to be a feminist icon but I DO see a lot of people talking like that outside of this site so I get you. It's definitely something that needs to be addressed.

Idk I personally struggle with how I balance the fact that Lana has talked about her continual abuse as a woman in and out of relationships and ALL throughout the music business and thinking of how that might have not given her much space to formulate her views outside of her fame vs the fact that she still is a white person with power and wealth and that she IS insanely privileged.

But regardless of all of the above, that's really just trying to figure out where she's coming from and help understand where she actually stands. That doesn't change the things that happened (her saying she wants to perform in Israel because "we can heal wounds with music etc" and that "both sides" stance she took just weeks ago) and we're too far gone as a world to not have to be held accountable for those dangerous takes (especially for someone with as rabid of fans as Lana Del Rey who will buy whatever she sells). Like, I get that she didn't ask to be a spokesperson/role model...but she's become one. Idk.

Lana is notoriously great at dragging men who deserve it but I'm not equating that to her being a feminist icon. I was disappointed by her recent comments as I thought her views had evolved. And maybe they have started to, but it's clear there's still a way to go. She's also part of Hillsong which sucks.

Obviously the abuse she has suffered is awful and should be condemned. But that's not a get-out-of-jail-free card for all the damaging shit she comes out with. If she's going to play a part (no matter how small) in legitimising apartheid, I could care less about her "perspective" on any major issues and I just wish she'd shut the fuck up tbh. She could just not comment on this stuff and stick to the music.

Yeah I definitely agree, no one's asking her to give an opinion on Israel-Palestine, it'd be very easy for her to just go "ok!" and take a very safe route of not playing there
