He defended pretty clear sexism without making any attempt to understand why it was in fact sexism. How isn't that wrong?

I'm honestly just curious and not trying to "gotcha" you or anything, but what's the moderation policy regarding the original posts about the song being sexist? I totally understand that the post in question was unnecessary, but I feel like we're just letting go of the harmful posts that led to that response.

 

We just need Tom Delonge to post another crazy rant about sekret (see what I did there) meetings with fake generals and other high ranking government agents telling him they made contact and then posting links to shitty merch and telling us to wait for some crazy revelations in his next book to get back on track here.

 

That's not how I interpreted the conversation that took place. Really though, we are all just talking about Blink 182 on a message board, let's try to give each other the benefit of the doubt huh? I, personally, didn't read anything malicious or offensive in his initial statement, he just seemed to not agree with the sentiment that Dumpweed is a sexist song.

 

And the point is that he's wrong, like again, it's not a matter of opinion whether something is sexist. And by laughing it off and rolling his eyes at the suggestion that it's sexist, that kind of post helps propagate the sexism that's rampant in the scene.

It's like nobody is allowed to make jokes without being labeled anymore. In my opinion, when it comes to jokes, either everything is okay or nothing is, but that's just me. I don't think making a sexist joke makes you a sexist, or saying a gay joke makes you a homophobe. I'm not defending sexism, I'm defending humor. Taking away or limiting women's rights is sexist. Hating someone because they are gay makes you a homophobe. I know this comes off as narrow minded to some and people are going to say i'm ignorant, but i'm not, I could give examples proving i'm not, but then people would start jumping on me for giving examples. I just think we as a society today are way too easily offended. If someone finds something offensive, we all have to say it's offensive instead of telling that person, "hey, it's not as offensive as you think".

 

He had an opinion, and even if I don't agree with said opinion, it's not breaking any forum rules.

 

It's easy to think people are too easily offended when you're in every majority group in society.

 

That's fair, and if you want to take it up with that poster you should (and you have). I just thought it was maybe time to move on, and nothing was said, again in my opinion, that warranted someone being shunned from the forum entirely.

 

Dude - ease up and get off your soapbox. I understand what sexism is. I disagreed with the original statement and explained why - doesn't mean I am wrong or you are wrong. We each have our own opinion. It wasn't laughed about or eyes rolled.... it was a discussion.

 

1. Know your audience
2. Make sure the joke is actually funny
3. You aren't allowed to tell people what they think

 

...If you know what you're saying is so stupid you have to preface by saying "I know this is going to make me look like the jerk that I am" but still feel the need to say it because doing so is more important than just accepting that some behaviours hinder diversity and inclusion, you've got a big problem.

Mainly I just think people should make an effort to learn about these things and actually listen when someone's claiming a song or whatever is sexist. No one here is perfect, everyone's said or defended some shitty things in the past out of ignorance, but this is why we strive to improve.
