Looking at my last.fm since 2010 onwards, there's only about 4 or 5 rappers who specifically got big post 2010. And even some of them had a few mixtapes prior to that (Danny Brown, Ka)

See that’s even more methodical than I am haha I haven’t really listened to some that would make my top 10 in years

oh my god, I'm back on my bullshit Prestigious

My favourites change all the time, due to how much music I listen and how much new music I listen to each year. My top 10 would not be the same as my top 10 this time last year.

My top 10 most played rappers on last.fm:

G Perico, Mozzy, Vince Staples, YG, Earl Sweatshirt, Kamaiyah, Freddie Gibbs, Nef The Pharaoh, Schoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar

See if I came up with a favourite list right now it wouldn't look much like that lol

My favourite list changes all the time. I'd probably have Biggie, Aesop Rock, Nas and MF DOOM as guaranteed top 10 spots. Then there's Brother Ali, Danny Brown, Ka who would probably be in there too, but below. Maybe Action Bronson and Ghostface are in there too. But I don't think I could ever put them in a top 10 because it depends on so many things.

I think Gibbs is probably my personal favorite (and arguably one of the "subjective best") of the "new school"

Kendrick would have been close to the top of my list after GKMC - not to disparage his work after GKMC, but boy do I listen to him A LOT less since then.

If Gibbs only worked with Madlib, i'd say he'd be up there as one of my favourites. His beat selection on his solo stuff is fine, but 'lib takes him to another level.

I personally need a little versatility for me to declare a rapper top 10 or whatever

His Madlib collabs are top tier for sure, but the rest of his discography (including mixtapes and studio albums) is still pretty solid. I feel like his hit to miss ratio is way higher than most other rappers, but it's all just personal preference.

The mindset of like a top ten best rappers feels so antiquated, I never like viewing art as a competition, it kind of leans into the whole idea of battle rappers and the priority of technical ability or speed over like, artistic expression. There's a reason good battle rappers never release great albums really, its different skills with different outcomes.

Also art is so subjective, me and Lucky Moose last year had like two full top ten hip hop album lists with no overlap, and those opinions are both valid because we look for different things from different types of artists. Categorizing everything as a competition stifles creativity in certain, even if it may push people to hone their craft, more often than not it encourages the wrong aspects of that craft.

That said, ranking stuff is fun and easy clickbait on the internet cause people love to fight about subjective shit so its not going anywhere. Black Thought, Biggie, Tupac, Andre, Kendrick objective top 5, my hot take, PEACE.

I wouldn’t rank anyone based on technical abilities. The again it can help. Kool Moe Dee once put out this book where he ranks rappers on the basis of a shitload of criteria and that produced a very versatile list (for that time anyway). That was a pretty interesting if nothing else.

I once made this one, but I don't really know if I like it. It's definitely not a "Best Rappers" list. Also I listened to a lot more Fat Joe than Big Pun for example. Also this is obviously nostalgia driven. Really I need like an unranked Top 25.

    1. Biggie
    2. Jay Z
    3. LL Cool J
    4. Ghostface
    5. Nas
    6. Bun B
