I’ve said this here before but I’ve almost always prioritized health care over everything else and would typically be my first choice to spend political capital on, but I’m starting to lean towards climate change being the first thing to address.

Political reality. Laws take time to debate and write and political capital usually only allows you to get one major issue, maybe two if you're lucky, before the next election. That's kind of what happened with the GOP and their attempts to both 1. repeal the ACA and 2. pass a tax cut. The ACA repeal failed and then they had to try and rush through a taxcut that ended up being written really shoddily.

That's why it's kind of important how the bureaucracy does business. Get someone willing to push executive branch power to the limits to run the EPA and you can do a lot. Obama's CPP was a decent example of this, but as Trump has proven, the danger there is how easy it is to undo those things that aren't codified in law/the next guy can use the expansion of power to do damage in the reverse.

It's not going to be popular to say here but the argument about which issue to prioritize is an important one because you're not going to get everything you want passed even in a perfect storm where Dems hold the white house + both legislative branches AND the filibuster isn't an issue.

And that's not even taking into account that the Dems are going to have to spend time cleaning up the absolute mess Trump is going to be leaving behind in some of these federal agencies, and fixing the legislative rules that Mitch has destroyed. SOME sort of filibuster reform is going to have to take place, if it's not outright getting rid of it, then at least changing it back to the way it was where senators have to actually filibuster, and those rule changes will also take time and end up using up some political capital as it dominates the news cycle for a week.

  25. We need something fundamental to shake up the race soon or Biden is probably going to be the nominee.

    So that's bad.
