could be a bunch of things. sample clearance, trying to put a last minute feature or something, industry stuff I don’t understand

I’m anxious to hear it too, but assuming it would come out at midnight was an assumption by us. Not an unfair one, but hey there’s plenty of other stuff out today

You don’t need to tell me how criticism works. Something feeling/sounding rushed literally means nothing.

i think sounding rushed means the album is not as fleshed out as it could be or they're just releasing whatever they have and calling it an album and somethings sound a little half baked. TLOP sounds much more rushed to me than MBDTF for example. It's good but it's all over the place mix/sound wise and ends up feeling like a collection of loosies where as every song on MBDTF sounds like it belongs because they worked so hard to make it that way.

My whole point is that until the artist says “I didn’t have time to finish this” I don’t think we can read it that way. They very well could be artistic choices, which in that case doesn’t mean it sounds rushed but just doesn’t sound like what you (or whatever listener) wanted

This isn’t even a conversation worth having, I shouldn’t have engaged, I’m just so burnt out on broad proclamations/speculation and (what I perceive as) entitlement.

    beautiful and chequered, the end

all that matters is the artists intention, if an artist wanted the project to sound rough around the edges, then i dont think its fair to say it was "rushed". TBH we had literally zero indication this was supposed to drop at midnight last night (defiantly considering it wasnt on itunes for pre order, or even a track list released) so i see no reason to assume this roll out is going against his plans. Maybe the plan was always to release mid day?

Anyway if you’re itching for this album the YBN cordae album out today might tide you over

I don’t think the delay is unintentional but it’s also understandable that people think it’s due to a rocky rollout when you put it in context with everything else.

Also I agree that just because something is done in the last minute it doesn’t mean it’s rushed, but TLOP definitely sounds and feels rushed so idk.

I think @username has an apt point about "sounding rushed" becoming a catch all for "this wasn't what I wanted this to sound like"

Like unless the artist explicitly tells us it was rushed, or comes out saying it isn't what they intended, it does feel weird to give something that label off the bat

I really hope not, because those two statements mean completely different things. But nuance is dead on the internet

For me, if I say something sounds rushed, I usually mean that I understand where the artist is going - but believe they should go further or flesh it out more within the context of what the artist is intending, not what I want it to sound like

and I'm not saying people ITT are doing that necessarily

I just see "rushed" more and more overused I guess as a criticism when we don't really know if that's the case

Yeah, exactly. If anything, "this sounds rushed" is actually an acknowledgment of understanding what the artist was going for and feeling like they fell short of that.

If something doesn't sound the way I wanted it to sound, I'll just...say "this doesn't sound how I wanted it to sound" lol. But also I'll look at it objectively and ask whether the album is good for what it's going for, regardless of whether I personally like it or whether it's what I personally wanted from it.

    oh we beefin now

jk - but totally see your point. Its a large portion for my belief that being a music listener should be an active experience, not a passive one

  18. It’s kind of similar to the “filler” criticism where yeah it’s just making a total assumption about the artist’s process based on the songs not doing what the listener feels like they should

Btw that YBN Cordae album's pretty dope so far

But like, something can sound like a filler track to a listener even if the artist believes that song is 100% necessary to the record. Is it making an assumption about the artist's process or is it just the listener saying "Hey, this song could've been dropped from the record and I personally wouldn't miss it"?

ur right idk if that's the case rn, but he had a big hand in the pablo sessions clearly so I really wouldn't be surprised if he's tweaking it still.

Also, as a professional procrastinator, I understand that some of my best work is done under pressure, so the artist can decide what process works for them.

I think Yeezus vs Pablo makes for a great case study in something that feels rushed and something that is purposely jagged and rough but still coherent.

I also don't think an artist is gonna come out and say "I totally rushed this project but listen to it anyway lol", so idk

obviously no lol, but there are many cases of artists coming back years after the fact and stating that their work was rushed due to label deadlines, external pressures, etc.
