And judging by early reactions, it's a perfect nod to the original, while still being new and great.

Yeah, this is fine. It is basically a shot-for-shot remake, albeit slower because they’re mimicking actual animals than the fluidly fast-paced versions in the cartoon. They update the humor, add more fart jokes and adda few things to the characters, but nothing that will upset fans of the original.

And with that said, it doesn’t really add anything new or improve the original in any way. It kind of reiterated my point that what makes the characters in the original so special is how expressive their faces were and how the animation added so much energy to the picture. With this, their emotions are way more subtle and movements are slowed down and as far as comparing to the original (since it is in no way besides the CGI its own movie) I think it doesn’t work as well for the story.

I think it was important they didn’t whitewash the voice cast like most of the original and everyone does a fairly good job. The new song is kind unmemorable and “Be Prepared” and “Hakuna Matata” pale in comparison to the original. The hyenas are particularly forgettable.

That said, the CGI is the real star and it is amazing. It’s on a whole new level and if you’re going for that, you’ll be impressed.

I don't really care about this movie one way or the other but this made me laugh a lot:

Does Glover sing in the new song? Or does he only sing in Hakuna Matata and Can You Feel the Love

Because he’s a pretty terrific movie critic and all footage of this looks pretty bad

I'll take all of that with a huge grain of salt since:

    1. What he wrote is childish and clearly hyperbole. Even movies I down right hate, I'd never use that language to explain it. This guy is suppose to be a professional?

    2. It's majority opinion that this looks fantastic.

i don’t expect i’ll enjoy this a ton or anywhere near the original but the dude doesn’t write anything anymore about why specific movies are bad, it’s always a takedown of the studio and industry writ large. dude is the ian cohen of film criticism - i typically agree with his end result but cringe about 5 times reading his piece before it gets to that point.

But this is going for a more realistic look....

The cartoon could do a lot more because they didnt always have to move like real animals. What is the point of that?

You could make the argument that a realistic take of "The Lion King" takes away most of what made it special.

Take away or just doing something different? This being made doesn't erase the original. Why can't there be both?

What’s the point if it looks like that? The soundtrack?

You could say the same with Jungle Book, which ended up being better than the original. I guess since none of us has seen it, we'll just have to wait and see.

Woof. Reviews are pretty mixed. Kind of a bummer. But I'll still be seeing it.
