Gardiner is one of the more divisive players I’ve seen in recent memory. Produces, does a lot of things well, but makes so many boneheaded mistakes that somehow always seem to end up in the back of his own net that a solid 70% of the fan base here in Toronto wants him dead.

He makes boneheaded plays for sure, but he's a good player that is a very solid skater and moves the puck really well -- he had like 53 points the season before last. Did he cost us last year's Game 7 vs Boston because of poor decision making? Quite possibly, yes.

But had we not picked up Barrie and instead another Muzzin-type player, I would have taken Jake back

 

Agreed. I’m not a Leafs fan, but most of my friends and family are, and living near Toronto I see a good chunk of their games. Gardiner isn’t a perfect player by any stretch of the imagination, but I’ve always been firmly in the camp that he gets far more flack than he deserves.

 

Offensive defensemen typically do, sadly

 

Devils fans do the same thing with Severson

He is never going to be a defensive stalwart. If he were, he'd be a top 5 DMan in the league. The reason why these players "gaffes" are so prevalent is because they have the puck on their stick so often

 

The markets matter too. Thor basically let the jackets back in the game, which led them to a series win but you don't hear bolts fans endlessly crapping on him endlessly the way leafs fans do with Gardy.

 

If Gardiner ends up on the Habs, I can only imagine what some Leafs fans will say the next 5-7 years. Should at least be entertaining, as that rivalry always is.

 

I can only imagine Gardiner getting booed every time he touches the puck in Toronto if he's in a Habs sweater, stupidly. I'd be upset if he did go to Montreal, but it's not like he spurned us asking for a trade and made the team far worse or something. He's a UFA, he's allowed to do whatever he wants.
