I'm sure they change things musically to compromise with the vocalist's ideas. But that is a half-and-half process, the vocalist isn't automatically dictating that. The guitarist & bassist & drummer still have to figure out WHAT to play that will fit best with that vocal part, not the vocalist.

Nah you are definitely simplifying this too much haha

Bad bass can literally ruin the flow of the guitar and drums

but i do agree with how @EmmanuelSCastle phrased it, in that I'm making a false dichotomy

not liking a band because of the vocals isn't the same thing as pitting vocals vs instruments, it just "is what it is" if good instruments can't "make up for" bad vocals. I do agree with that specific way of looking at it.

 

Also not liking something because of lyrics =/= vocals

I personally have to try so hard to learn the lyrics. Part of my ADD is sometimes words go in one ear and out the other, like when I'm watching movies I CONSTANTLY miss lines that were blatantly said. Or like, I'm so focused on the timbre & sound of the vocals, that the part of my brain that makes sense of words and articulation gets too distracted.

Usually it takes me literally 20-30 listens of a song to know the lyrics, and by then I've already decided whether I like the song or not based on how it sounds. So this is sort of why lyrics don't have as much impact on my opinion of the music. I'd literally have to read the lyrics while listening to the song to make that kind of judgment call early on.

 

if every singer ceased trying to write lyrics and just started singing whatever inflection sounds better for the melody, all the songs would be better

Pretty sure pale horses. The rest of the band is in philly so they start the writing, do demos, go record with Yip and then start sending stuff to Aaron. Once they’re done, aaron flies from Idaho to Philly and does the vocals and stuff last. I think the only exception was Break On Through
