I mean in the case of the Smiths the songwriting credits are literally Marr-Morrissey and in the case of REM no musical decision went forward unless they all agreed (admittedly Stipe had more power over this)

no one's saying they should be given more of or most of the credit just that you're definitely underselling their role. esp cause these people are almost certainly coming up with the vocal melodies and as far as songwriting goes the melody is key to my reception of it, esp in pop punk which is ostensibly supposed to highlight melodic ability

Because the vocals and lyrics are a major factor of the song. and if they are bad, they drag down the rest.

 

Yeah the National is a VERY unique band in which the singer is the last part of the songwriting process instead of the first.

 

I"m just saying that as a musician it takes weeks to finish a songs instrumentals and tie off all the loose ends / transitions smoothly... but a vocalist can literally write their vocal melodies on the spot in the studio and this actually happens often.

I'm not saying it's easier to be creative as a vocalist... but it is easier to apply that creativity and get something written. By only crediting the vocalist, a person is ignoring MOST of the work that went into that album / song.

 

That's not that unique! lol, that's true for most bands where the singer doesn't play guitar or piano or anything

I get where you're coming from but this is such a guitar players perspective haha. a good melody is a good melody even if it's tossed off, and if someone did a spontaneous guitar solo that sounded sick no one would ever bat an eye, they'd just say that person is a good guitar player. and if it's not as easy to apply that to the song that's on the guitar player too. a good song is a good song and all the components are important (though I guess I will say a good rhythm section is the difference between a good song and a great one imo but that's not to diminish other roles, it's just not typically where most people start w songwriting and the one exception I can think of is the white stripes who mostly suck)
