This is his first book. I devoured it and - damn, it's great from start to finish. I look forward to whatever he writes next!

Definitely one of those books to add to the top of your reading list.

 

It is weird I feel like I'm never actively awaiting new books to come out. I'd still consider myself a "novice" into reading since I only got back into it 2-3 years ago, so I only have a few authors I KNOW I am exciting for their next book. I usually get my recommendations through Goodreads, here, and sometimes just browsing Target (then going to the Used Book store).

I am definitely excited for the Institute by Stephen King later this year!

 

Suzanne Collins announces a Hunger Games prequel this morning! Starts the day of the Tenth games.

 

I’ve started Maggie Cassidy by Kerouac. I was always curious about it. It’s nice so far, though I always have to get used to his style again.

 

Afropean: Notes from Black Europe by Johny Pitts

Also starting this one today.

 

started listening to Infinite Jest again and i gotta say, i really do love that book. it's hard to explain why and it took a long time, but it's so great and just puts me in a zone. eventually i'm gonna remember to read it in chronological order and not the order it's written in but i always forget.

 

Already amazed.

Never heard of it before, but upon reading the synopsis and reviews on Goodreads this seems right up my alley!

My wife and I both loved it!

It's the first in a trilogy, 3rd book comes out in August. One of my favorite series from the last couple of years.

No-No Boy by John Okada (1957)

Taking place in 1946, it follows Ichiro Yamada, a Japanese-American man, as he settles back into normal life in Seattle, WA after spending two years in an internment camp and two more years in prison for refusing to fight for the U.S. in WWII.

I enjoyed this way more than I expected. The language it’s written in feels incredibly modern which made for a very easy read. Apparently it wasn’t successful at all until years after Okada died. Which, in hindsight, I guess makes sense as it doesn’t shy away from accurately portraying the racial tension of the time and it certainty doesn’t make white people look good. Anyway, it’s something that was a little out of my wheelhouse but was a pleasant surprise and I’d recommend it.

 

Finished Sharp Objects tonight and wow at that ending

 

Did it catch you by surprise? I watched the HBO series before I read it which I wish I would’ve done in reverse.

 

Surprisingly, yes! I've read ALOT of books of this type over the past couple years, to the point that I can usually see what's coming in the end (even if I don't necessarily get it right on the "who") and not to say I wasn't completely surprised but the ending to this was crazy and much better then anticipated.

Also maybe it's just me but after reading so many books in this genre/type I can generally get a sense of how things will go down in the revealing and just story in general because there tends to be a general formula, for lack of a better word. But I appreciated how subdued and not overly intense this one played out. With this book it kinda took me awhile to get through, and not because it was bad or even overly hard or complicated it was just kinda slow I guess? (not in a bad way) just not really a whole lot happened.

I was thinking Alan (the stepfather) was gonna have more to do with things, but in the end I guess he was more of a benign red herring haha.

I definitely look forward to reading her other 2 books at some point for sure!

Have you read/watched Dark Places and/or Gone Girl?

 

Oh also I've been meaning to say this in here, I've noticed in the books I've chosen to read this year the name Annabelle has come up an inordinate amount and it kinda freaking me out how that's happened.

Anybody else noticed anything like this or something similar when reading?

 

I really like this book. It wasnt slow for me at all but my wife thought it was alittle slow at times.
I have read and watched both Dark Places and Gone Girl.
GG the book and movie were great. Dark Places was a good book but an awful movie.

 

My wife also read Dark Places and liked it better than Sharp Objects, so I definitely look forward to that one.

 

Its different style than the other two as far as how she does the chapters. Its quite darker too I think.

 

Dark Places is great! I felt the general plot was a little goofy on why the characters end up where they go, but besides that, her writing carries it and I remember heavily enjoying it as much as Sharp Objects.

In terms of Gone Girl ... ugh. I made a critical error and watched the movie when it came out before I got back into reading. I own it and will read it one day, but man, knowing the ending does suck.

In other news: just finished the Woman in Cabin 10! Loved it. I liked the Death of Mrs. Westaway a little more, but still loved this and flew through it in like 3 days.

NOW, based off this thread I couldn’t find The Fourth Monkey at any used bookstores but did find the 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle so I’m gonna dive into this next!

 

Definitely plan to read Dark Places and Gone Girl sometime in the near future/sometime this year. I've seen the Gone Girl movie but don't really remember much, I do remember the twist kinda but still wanna see how the book plays out.

Woohoo, loved Woman In Cabin 10! Probably my favorite of all of hers this far with Westaway close behind. Really looking forward to Turn of The Key! Which others of her's have you read?

Yeah from what I've seen it doesn't seem like most places stock The Fourth Monkey, might be between getting it from the library or Amazon or something. Really looking forward to what you think whene'er you're able to get your hands on it!


Enjoy 7.5 Deaths,. It took me awhile to read it but I enjoyed it quite a bit, really really cool execution

 

I wanted to finish all my half-started books this year. I've finished approx 1 lol. I just think I'm disinterested in them right now. Most of them are kinda depressing sociology or autobiography books.

I kinda wanna read something spooky!!

 

So the wife and my first “book club” book was a total fail since neither of us had time to finish it before it had to be returned back to the library.

Now it’s my time to choose a book and I went with No Country For Old Men. I love the movie and I’m sure the book will be just as good.
