I'm aware of Darkest Dungeon, but caring about how your actions affect procedurally-generated pawns insofar is it affects your ability to succeed at the game/affects your choices as a player isn't the same thing as Ubisoft trying to get you to care about an overarching narrative about freedom fighters where there isn't an anchor in the form of a crafted lead character or characters to attach to. We're talking about two entirely different things here.

I was able to still get invested with the narrative of XCom. Sure I guess that had a "lead character" but it was one irrelevant to game play so I don't think it was really necessary for getting invested.

But it might just be different things are important for us getting invested in a story.
