absolutely, agree completely. a lot of the songs are really interestingly put together in service of those aesthetics and it just makes for more interesting songs than so many of their peers. like, the metal / power metal stuff that shows up in some leads totally shouldn't work but it ends up being really tasteful juxtaposition of the actual song, the subject matter, and the recurring aesthetic motifs. like I was thinking earlier that the singles (mainly I'm not okay and thank you for the venom) probably stand out the most to me as sonically "other" but even they make a lot of sense in terms of what they add to the collective whole.

I was thinking he was probably the first big example in underground circles, then Pixies? so I was thinking there was a pretty solid tracing to be done here
