Nice. Ready for that Friday showing. Would have tried to do Thursday, but was sold out for the preview showing.

Alright, so the movie was way too long. Cut the opening Krypton bit down by half, then some of the drama with Zod and you have a pretty solid Superman movie. I actually enjoyed the slow buildup to the central conflict because it all looked so good, and Clark testing his limits after he gets the suit was a fun scene. The hand to hand/in air fight sequences were cool and felt like a videogame, in a good way. The movie is emotionally dry throughout, with the scenes with both parents being bright spots in that regard.

In terms of my expectations for BvS, I'm reassured that it will be competently made and an entertaining watch. I also expect it to be similarly dry and, I'll say 40 minutes too long.

I'm all for checking out new books. I mostly don't like how similar most of the stuff is. It feels like the stories aren't all that diverse. I just read Superman Unchained and was letdown. It weird considering how much I love Snyder.

1)Will be seeing this on Friday at my local Drive-In with 10 Cloverfield Lane.
2)I haven't read much Superman comics but Morrison's run on Action didn't do anything for me. I'm not really the biggest fan of Morrison though, except for some indie books of his. Hated Batman RIP, for one.

Yeah seems like it's getting good reviews and looks fantastic. Only issue my wife has is she hasn't seen Cloverfield, I told her I don't think you really need to it's not really a sequel from what i've read.

Yeah as long as she knows what Cloverfield is about it should be fine. Otherwise it... becomes a very confusing movie

Basically i told her its about a giant monster trying to destroy NYC seemed like that was about all that was needed haha. It's been a while since ive seen Cloverfield though and I don't own it, so hope i'm not forgetting anything.

That's all you need. There's but really any crossover storywise

Hopefully it's first in the double feature, I can imagine BvS ruining the experience for you

Actually it's second BUT i'm pretty pumped for BvS, honestly think i'll love it. Then again it doesn't take much for me to love movies, i'm not that picky haha.

  13. Seems like the audience polling services are saying this is getting a pretty good response (B+ from exit polls , RT's user score is at 78%, IMDB 8/10) from the general public. That's a pretty crazy difference between the critics and public, feel like it's usually not that separated?

Anyone can rate a movie on IMDb without having seen it. An IMDb user rating is probably even more separated from a film's actual quality than a RT score.

As far as audience/critic splits on movies, I think Man of Steel had a similar split. Maybe Amazing Spider-Man 2 as well. Maybe not THAT drastic, but given how few actual moviegoers have seen the movie yet, that isn't a lot to go on and will probably change at least a little bit over the next few days/weeks/months. And again, I can rate Batman v. Superman right now and my screening isn't for almost seven hours.

To the Wonder has 46% on RT from critics and 38% from audiences so that whole system can stuff it.

  16. Technically, an "official" reviewer could write and rate a movie without having seen it too. I know quite a few of the big name reviewers write outlines for their reviews before the movie and then fill in a lot of it after having seen it. Some even look like the "form" reviews that are becoming common in music. It's funny knowing some writers and critics from other publications and realizing a lot of them are no different than the rest of us, hung over, writing thoughts on art on a computer screen.

And I'm not saying it's a scientific measure by any means, but it is interesting that the exit polls (where companies actually talk to people when they come out of the theatre) and online polls all have the rating roughly around the same, and much higher than the critical consensus). The trend, at the moment, seems to be a split between the critics and audience. That definitely could change, but I find the divergence interesting at the moment.

I'm not sold on the IMDb rating being any more or less correlated with quality than a RT score though. They're both usually, from what I've seen, close together, and both not a great measure for quality.

  17. Numbers still appear on track for the March opening record, north of $150m, maybe $160m.

The cast have made some comments about a lot of the negative reviews from some critics.

One of many reasons RT scores mean absolutely nothing to me, haha. There are critics who's voices and outlooks I know and am interested in, I don't need an aggregate with a bunch of other people thrown in who I don't care about.

Yeah, neither speaks to anything particularly valuable. Rotten Tomatoes binary fresh/rotten system in particular distorts quality. If every critic RT pulled from thought a movie was just barely okay, it'd get 100%. Why laud a film for being mostly agreeable?

For super casual moviegoers who are basically looking at stuff like Star Wars and Zootopia, fine. Maybe they choose 10 Cloverfield Lane over Batman v. Superman. I get it. RT a solid place to get a recommendation or pick one movie over the other. But if you want to engage with films a little more and actually learn or understand or partake in a critical discussion, RT doesn't add much of any substance if you look at movies through that lens.

Ooof. My buddy just text me he's not feeling well and can't go with me to the 6:00 showing tonight... I have essentially two hours to find someone else to go with. I'd feel so awkward going to opening night alone!
