It's okay to expect good characters and good monster fights in the same movie, it also shouldn't be this hard to do.

    As a die-hard, I liked it, didn’t love it.

Edit: Lots of great Easter eggs, as well.

Just got back from a screening.

I enjoyed it quite a bit until about mid way and had a blast with the final battle but...there are a few things that could have saved this film.

    1. Redo the second half. Cut out the kid trying to fix her mom’s mistake. Cut out the entire underwater city and just have Mothra give Godzilla energy. Both of these edits would have caused the film to move a lot more smoothly.
    2. Don’t drown out the music during battles. I could barely hear the Godzilla theme song due to the monster roars drowning it out. I’m sitting here during the credits and it has been the only time I could actually hear the theme song for more than 15 seconds.
    3. I still don’t know exactly what the main villain was wanting. Was he wanting extinction or just a reset like the mom? It never stated. I feel like he could have just taken over or the mom could have just remained in his side without the need of a redemption plot.

I also love that Ziyi Zhang is a Shobijin from Infant Island. I definitely didn’t expect that but I’m glad they went for it.

This feels like the Marvel Studios version of Godzilla films.

Entertained me enough to say it’s worth seeing. Not great, but certainly not as bad as reviews I’ve seen. Farrrr worse ways to spend two hours.

I really enjoyed this. Godzilla 2014 was okay but I had issues with it so when I saw this getting worse reviews I wasn't expecting this to be good, but it far and away exceeded my expectations. The fighting scenes were fantastic and that's obviously what most people are there for. Personally I want a movie with good characters and good fights. And I didn't really have a problem with the characters, I think they were fine for the most part. But I really didn't like Mark, the character was not that bad but I feel the actor who played him just didn't work for the role.

The only part of the movie that I didn't really enjoy was when they were on the submarine exploring the underwater city and such. I found myself zoning out and not caring for what was going on.

Also I took my friend who doesn't know single thing about Godzilla and she LOVED it and immediately started asking me a bunch of questions about Godzilla lore so that was cool.

Godzilla 2014 was better, genuinely. The monsters were incredible and breathtaking and I was on the edge of my seat every second they were on the screen.

Everything else was like, Venom level bad. Maybe worse. The atrocious script obviously doesn’t help but almost every key actor except Ken Watanabe and Zhang Ziyi was annoying the hell out of me. Aaron Taylor Johnson may be one of the most vanilla actors of all time but I far prefer him to Kyle Chandler’s dopey fuckin ಠ_ಠ lookin ass face.

The biggest bummer for me was they totally failed at capturing the dismal, oppressive atmosphere of Godzilla 14. I get maybe it’s not possible with so many monsters but it felt like they sacrificed so much to cram the plot in. On that note, the pacing sucked too.

It’s probably because my expectations were lowered but I didn’t find the script extremely bad. Underwhelming, yes, but not 50% on RT bad. I think it’s about a 70%.

This movie is one of the franchises most human-driven films and I think that’s actually one of its faults. With a film so focused on monsters and attempting to give them so much screen time it’s really hard to try to weave a good human plot in between.

$6.3 million Thursday night. $3 million less than Godzilla (2014), but higher than Skull Island.

I saw the 2014 Godzilla when it came out but remember nothing about it. Should I rewatch it before seeing this one?

Also a couple of things I observed during the film when I was watching it:

When we first saw Ghidorah released in Antarctica, I though to myself, "this would be a perfect time to use that F-bomb". And what do you know, they did it. Bravo to them

When they said they lost Ghidorah over Brazil due to a tropical storm, I thought to myself, "There are never tropical storms in Brazil so either they are factually incorrect or something is off. Turns out something was off lol

I don't have a problem with the scene because it had to be done for the movie plot, but I find it hard to believe that Madison would be able to steal the device and walk all the way to Fenway park and go up to the broadcast booth without being noticed by anyone. But it's a monster movie so realism isn't really an important thing here I guess

My guess is that Kong will challenge Godzilla as “king” due to monsters bowing to him at the end of the film.
