Squire, like Balgord, has also reported some of the groups she’s come across. In November last year, she flagged an Indiana-based Klan group that used the page to organize events and rallies.

The report was never acted on by Facebook, she said. When she learned the group was holding a rally in Ohio last weekend, Squire checked her Facebook support inbox and say her report from last year was still under review.

“This is literally the Klan we’re talking about,” she said.

As a result of sporadic enforcement, the groups are able to not only continue organizing and spreading propaganda, but to make the conversation on Facebook more extreme. A common tactic is for the groups to swarm other pages’ comment sections, which is known as “raiding” or “brigading.”
