What's the full story of Payton and pills? I feel like I've only heard tabloid-level bullshit on reddit or twitter.

They are definitely amazing at utilizing receiving backs. I'd argue that Reid could though. Reid's had super talented backs like Westbrook, Hunt, and Charles, but has also turned dudes like Damien Williams into receiving machines.

I mean, if we ignore that Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas were first round talents that were near the top of their positional group then sure. Also I don't know why you are hyperfocusing on offensive scheme when a head coach has more than that to focus on.

Funny enough in the NEXT post I brought up that Reid is probably the only other guy who turns all his favorite weapons into gold haha

Because obviously he’s being rated high based on his strong suit. Having an offense so unstoppable that other teams’ only option is to basically outscore you is worth top 5, especially if that’s been true 13 years in a row.

I also love how you’ll bring up draft position to justify the offense, but you conveniently ignore the fact that their defense draft picks are usually awful, as an explanation for why Payton struggles with defense.

This is the team that reached for Marcus Davenport

This is the team that, when they need a CB, they draft dudes like PJ Williams

When they need a LB, they sign guys like Curtis Lofton

I think the problem is Mickey Loomis doesn’t have a good eye for defensive talent. The only good picks that were recent are Sheldon Rankins and Marshon Lattimore.

    The rivalry is back on

If they were first round talents, they would have gone in the first round :)

    Yeah

“I liked Kamara and Thomas in college therefore Payton gets no credit for developing them into elite producers in the NFL”

I’m just not buying it, @CarpetElf

They were good to begin with but they took another leap and advanced faster than most similar young talent around the league because of Payton’s tutelage. Using the past as suggestive evidence, it’s not far fetched to say that Payton gets THE MOST out of his weapons.

Having the statistical best QB of all time may or may not factor into that though.

An elite coach can make up for that with scheme though.

Funny to think in 2016, the Browns took Corey Coleman in the first round. Could you imagine if they would've snagged Michael Thomas instead?

Then again, THOSE Browns would've probably found a way to under utilize him and trade him away lol.

Good thing I never said that lol. I'm saying that you're giving Payton too much credit when MT and Kamara were GREAT prospects.

They weren’t the best receiver and best RB in that draft. But they are performing like it in that offense

In hindsight, they were. I'm not going to discredit their abilities and say it's entirely on scheme. Kamara would be just as good if he were on another team. MT probably not but that's due to Drew Brees.

Was Brees gonna be the statistical best QB of all time without Payton? I doubt it so much that it’s impossible in my mind.

Payton saw something in Brees that the rest of the league overlooked (sans Miami, who weren’t nearly as good at coaching offense). I credit Payton for Brees having those ridiculous stats too. Because real talk, Brees is not better than Manning, Brady, and maybe he’s now better than Rodgers but only after Rodgers declined.

But Payton understands how to emphasize his strengths. Heck he still throws a lot of picks but he throws so many damn TD that it doesn’t even matter.

Pro Football's summary of Michael Thomas pre-draft -
"A 4.57 40-yard dash at the combine confirmed what we thought about Thomas on film — that he lacks the speed to be a downfield burner in the NFL. However, he uses his hands and feet very well to get separation. He might not fly past defensive backs in the NFL, and that might limit him to being a good No. 2 receiver rather than a No. 1. However, he does the little things well and has shown that he can go up and win the ball in the air — something he had to do at times given Ohio State’s quarterback situation."

    Yikes.

I think Brees is going to be elite and one of the best regardless, yeah. Like saying Brady wouldn't be good without BB.

And come on man. Brees has *several* 5000 yard seasons.

Some of that is the coaching. You aren’t giving Payton ENOUGH credit if you think he would’ve done that on any team. Better QBs have not even sniffed his per-year yardage totals

Great prospects still require great coaching to become elite weapons.
