A candidate needs a majority of the electoral votes (270) to win the election. In the 2000 election, Gore won the popular vote, but Bush won the electoral vote and won the presidency. Most states allow write-ins, but some don't. Most of the states that do allow write-in votes require some sort of filing by the write-in candidate though, otherwise the votes are discarded. For another candidate to win they wouldn't have to just beat Clinton and Trump in the electoral vote, they would have to win a majority (270). If no candidate reaches that mark, then the House of Representatives elects the president.

Has the house ever had to do that?

It's happening this season on Veep. They mentioned it happened in the 1824 election.

Robert Reich posted this on his facebook today that I found interesting and I absolutely agree with it

In the event that the vote is saturated between multiple candidates like would be the case in a Trump/Clinton/Sanders/Stein/Johnson/Romney scenario, I've always wondered if the House would respect the popular plurality or risk public backlash by electing the candidate of the majority party.

    Everywhere you look... Prestigious

If the House of Representatives has to elect a president, do they have to pick one of the candidates on the ballot or can they pick whoever they want?

I think the reason Brexit happened was because the party leaders led a callously racist, pathetically dishonest campaign that promised impossible things. The blame lies primarily with them, not the people who voted leave.

I'm pretty sure that anyone who is voting for Clinton by using the excuse that it is to prevent Islamaphobia is full of shit:

    Clinton to Palestine: Drop dead

You're right that the core issue is dishonest politicians but this was an entirely popular election, the people who voted leave deserve blame as well. This isn't like in the states where we can say "well the electoral college should've stopped this".

The British electorate opted to ignore morality and conscious reasoning, that's an issue. Now excuse me as I go vote for Hillary...

Nope, she's just not as bad as Trump and has the only realistic chance of stopping him. A shame Stein can't shore up the numbers but I guess I'm to blame for that.

If anyone ever argues that Israeli aggression is justified, have them go through this:

What are you talking about? No, it isn't your fault. There are laws that make it nearly impossible for third parties to enter into the mainstream discourse or even be present at the debates. The sole reason Jill Stein is even on anyone's radar this year is precisely because we have two terrible candidates. Anyway, I am not talking about whether or not Trump is worse. That misses the point, which is that any rhetoric about Hillary being "better" is facile, given the recent developments with regard to Israel. Her people ensured that they put in their platform an opposition to one of the most effective tools available to combat Israel's genocidal policies. She herself has been supportive of the legislation that effectively undermines BDS's So, as I said, if one thinks by voting for Hillary, they're helping to combat Islamaphobia and racism, they're either delusional or full of shit.

Yeah, you're right... The racist campaign resonated with voters for a reason. But i think I'm inclined to be more disgusted in the campaign leaders because they're not the ones feeling pressed for medical aid or in financial strains. Not that that makes it at all right.
