Ashley Monroe, Maren Morris, Brandy Clark, Kaitlin Butts, Aubrie Sellers, and Logan Brill all might appeal.

    Thanks!

I have looked into the first three a while ago (Spotify recommended them), and they sound a little more "Pop" (not sure how else to put it) than what I am looking for. Same goes for Logan Brill. Kaitlin Butts is more like it, I just listened to some of her songs on Spotify and I like what I hear. I will definitely check out more of her music. I can only find one recorded song by Aubrie Sellers, but it sounds pretty cool.

By the way, the artists could also be male, I'm not necessarily looking for "female artists like Kacey". It's more about the vibe, if that makes sense.

Kacey is pretty "pop" already. Not sure I know what you're looking for.

Yeah I don't know how to describe it. Kacey's instrumentaion seems more stripped down or organic to me (without sounding like Alt Country), whereas Ashley Monroe's instrumentation (this applies to many other singers like her as well) has more pathos (best term I could think of right now) in it. Also, Kacey's lyrics are sort of different from the others I think, the way she writes sounds very different to me from most country artists I know (and this is not to say one is better than the other). The lyrics are lesse relevant in my search though.

This might just all be in my head, haha.

Ya, the first part of the article you might think he's against Chris Stapleton, but he goes on to say he hopes to grow as tired of Sturgill and others in the same way...sort of a back handed compliment, but these types of artists deserve a lot more recognition than they receive already, and The Ringer is great exposure.

I like that he gave Brandy, Sturgill, and Maren that kind of exposure--though, arguably, those three don't really need it. I mean, Maren Morris just debuted at number 5 on the Billboard charts. I don't like that he said "a half-dozen other country artists deserve it, too." I feel like there are so, so many other artists who could resonate in the way Stapleton did if given the right level of attention, and who would deserve it just as much. Just kind of wish he'd covered some of the ones that really haven't gotten a lot of buzz this year or last. Cool to see people in the comments of the article reacting positively to it though, and calling out other artists on the level of the three he focused on.

New Elizabeth Cook comes out tomorrow, so far everything I've heard from it sounds good. Also new ones from Sarah Jarosz, The Low Anthem, and the new Neko Case project case/lang/veirs. Looking forward to tomorrow!

any opinions on john pardi? previewed some tracks from the new album on iTunes and it just sounds like generic pop country if the pop was dialed back and some cursory grit/twang was added. its just weird to me when albums like this get praised as bringing country back to its roots when there are far, far better albums by far, far better musicians (see: corb lund, william clark green, hayes call, aubrie sellers) that do more for a traditional country resurgence.

I think he gets some praise because he's one of the few people on country radio whose sound has a semblance of classic country to it. I enjoy his record, though didn't love it. I'd obviously rather see William Clark Green get that praise, but think he's probably too lyrically abrasive to ever get on mainstream country radio.

In line right now to see Margo Price do a secret free afternoon show. Don't really know her, but I'm excited nonetheless.

  21. I recently wrote reviews for Donovan Woods' and Parker Millsap's most recent albums.

2016’s Midyear Best #5: Donovan Woods
2016’s Midyear Best #9: Parker Millsap

Aubrie Sellers and Vince Gill were honorable mentions for my midyear list, nothing else in country has really grabbed me yet this year. I think I'm a major outlier for not liking Margo Price. Haven't spent much time yet with Maren or Brandy.

Is there anything notable in country I should be keeping an eye on for the second half of the year? @cshadows2887 @Craig Manning @Meerkat ?

Lori McKenna's upcoming record was produced by Dave Cobb, so I'm sure that's going to be good. Here's a song from it: Songs We Love: Lori McKenna, 'The Bird & The Rifle'

Also, new stuff from Shovels and Rope, Drive By Truckers, Lydia Loveless, Amanda Shires, and John Paul White. And the new Butch Walker, of course, which might be his most Nashville-leaning record yet.

Oh yeah. Well, you can already hear it a bit in "Stay Gold," hence the RS Country premiere. But there's also that Ashley Monroe duet, a song that namedrops Nashville in the chorus, and "Record Store," which sounds like a Jason Isbell song.

  25. I haven't listened to any of the prerelease tracks. Patiently waiting.
