I, too, would acknowledge another band's single that was making money for me. Tom is nobody's fool. When Blink wins, so does he.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

I don't completely love California but it came out in a week where a family member died and I had to walk to work in the freezing cold every morning. Songs like San Diego, Left Alone, even Hey I'm Sorry have a pretty big impact on me still from memories of that week

Not that Cali deluxe took many chances but on Long Lost Feeling I remember some people wanted the end of that song to "explode" (people love exploding lol) and I just loved like the short soft ending cause it wasn't that

There's nothing formulaic about doing what's best for the song. The chorus should explode, not whimper. A guitar-driven punk rock band shouldn't have its rhythm guitar in their mix's bottom frequency.

I'm all for subversion if it makes your song stronger. In this case, subversion makes the song weaker and less effective, per its literal definition.

I'm starting to come around on this song, but yeah, it still just feels really small and confined as a song, idk.

Choruses should elevate the song; they should also sound elevated. Part of that is the punch/explosion (or any noun of choice) that you get from adding an instrument that wasn't previously there. When you tease a heavy guitar in the lead-up to the chorus and fail to deliver on it (a la 'Blame'), you don't get the desired or expected effect. Instead, the rhythm guitar is an afterthought in the bottom frequency. Anyway, I guarantee this song will sound heavier live. The vocals will be challenging, obviously.

Haha yeah I agree! I mean I could easily say more negative things but hey - if people like it then cool. I just was hoping for a different direction.

I'm not sure if I watched that episode, Red Hot Chili Peppers is the only one I def watched

  11. I’m sure the song will work in context with the album. At least I’d hope so.

But I agree with those who’ve said that they wish the chorus would have exploded or at least been a little bigger. That’s my only criticism really.

California dropped when my (now) wife and I were driving from Raleigh up to Cleveland for a friend's wedding - we ended up leaving a little late, so we were in the middle-of-nowhere West Virginia, and starting to get a little tired. Then I realized the album was finally available for streaming. Almost drove the car off the road losing my shit to Cynical. I just remember yelling "FUCKIN SKIBA!!!!" at the first "WHAT'S THE POINT OF SAYIN SORRY NOWWWWW"

    Good times.

I honestly want to know what those dudes think of themselves being on that show and also what they think of blink now. Also Tom wearing an AVA shirt that far back (probably just for his daughter at the time, but the foreshadowing was there).

  14. I remember being very jealous of this too

  15. I always loved the show Fanatic! I was soooo jealous of the dude on Blink’s episode.

When I was younger, I thought Becoming was awesome too. But damn. What a cringey show! Watching that Blink episode now is just so weird. Hahaha.

Man I wish they would go back to sounding like amateurs recording in a garage like they did on TOYPAJ

  22. I’d like to know what Tom Lord Alge was charging for mixes back then.

Probably just for them to house sit for him while he went on vacation.
