Hey Satan's Hallow fans - four of the five peeps from that band have a new band called Midnight Dice. They only have a demo out, but it's some solid stuff in the vein of their old band.

There is definitely some cringeworthy albums in this video but it is pretty cool that he names drops Triple B records and also brings up a Dead to Fall record considering the conversation in here recently.

I'm really surprised he didn't include Shai Hulud. I really love his channel. He seems super deep into those circles.

Yeah, I think he knows a lot of people in the hardcore and metal scene. Plus, he is business partners with the guys in Periphery.

I also think a lot of his videos are well thought out and he seems to have a very diverse taste while also staying pretty neutral in his stance.

If I end up doing a tier list I would probably separate Djent and Progressive. Because progressive bands like Atheist, Vektor, and Nevermore are very much my cup of tea while bands like Periphery, Born of Osiris, and Veil of Maya not so much...

I also feel that I would have to separate death metal bands a bit because bands like Bolt Thrower, Malevolent Creation, and Vomitory sound different then their murkier counterparts like Portal, Teitanblood, and Ævangelist

Pretty much I just know that Black Metal is my personal top S tier and F Tier would have Nu and Glam in it.

I think that’s what he did in the video. He sort of balanced out the fact that even though there are 1/10 bands that are great in a genre, there are 9/10 that are awful and that’s why he gave it the grade he did.

Well I view Djent differently from Progressive so I would probably put Progressive in low A or B tier, while Djent would be in D tier.

Also I like both traditional death and the murkier death, I just think that they could be seperate categories as well. Like Murkier death metal would be low S tier while death metal would be mid A tier.

Black metal and black metal adjacent genres are my favorite musical genre period including all genres like jazz, pop, classical, etc. So thats obviously S tier And I like next to nothing in Nu or Glam so its easy to put them in F tier.

I also know black metal is a rather broad spectrum like Emperor doesnt sound much like Deathspell Omega which doesnt sound much like Blasphemy which doesnt sound much like Nifelheim. But I love them all so... lol

    a literal succubitch

    S: Deathcore, death metal
A: Metalcore, black metal, grindcore, folk metal
    B: thrash, heavy, pirate metal
C: Power metal, industrial metal, doom metal, prog/djent, nu metal
    D: Symphonic metal
    F: Glam, Christian Metal

Not putting Viking metal on here because it's barely a genre and even if it is, the only things that qualify are not the ones everyone pictures when they hear Viking metal. Amon Amarth is not Viking metal, it's Viking-themed melodeath - the only example out there I can think of that has a claim to stake over the genre name would be early Enslaved.

This wasn't too hard to figure out for me. My C tier is mostly just stuff I'm not as well-versed in as I wish I was (though I'll fight anyone on nu-metal being underrated). Symphonic goes in D tier because it sounds cool until you realize almost every fucking symphonic metal band just uses a synth and absolutely nothing else and calls it a day. Glam and Christian metal are self-explanatory I feel like. I gotta be in a specific mood for Thrash and Trad metal hence why they're in B and Pirate metal is a pretty one-note genre - but damn if that note isn't fantastic. Folk is in A tier almost exclusively due to Eluveitie. I think they're that good.

And S tier is easy because my life is a deathcore phase.

For the record, I did not assume that grind was part of extreme metal, which was an oversight on my part. Probably would be within the top two tiers in that case

I have trouble lumping in VoM with other Djent bands cause Okubo’s work on their first two albums is beyond compare with their peers in the genre. Last two albums are whatever though.

Viking metal are bands like 90s onward Bathory, early Enslaved, Falkenbach, Einherjer, Windir, and Borknagar. Kind of melodic black metal written with song structures based off of certain Scandinavian folk tropes.
But yeah bands like Amon Amarth and Unleashed that are called viking metal only because of their lyrical themes are not viking metal.

    S: Death Metal, Thrash Metal
    A: Black Metal, Doom Metal
    B: Progressive Metal, Heavy Metal
c: Extreme (Grind), Viking Metal, Folk Metal
D: Power Metal, Metalcore, Djent, Industrial Metal
F: Symphonic Metal, Deathcore, Christian Metal, Nu Metal, Glam Metal, Pirate Metal

S: I am a death and thrash man, I'm simple.
A: I like black infused bands more than straight up black, like blackened thrash and death/black. Doom is great too.
B: There is a lot of bad prog metal but if we're talking Cynic and latter Death, then this is where I'd put the genre. "Heavy" is pretty nebulous (I guess most of these are) as it can mean everything from Iron Maiden to Manilla Road (which is more trad than anything). With that in mind, this is where I'd put it.
C: I've never really been into grind so this feels like a good spot. The same can be said for Viking and Folk.
D: When I think of Power Metal I think of Dragonforce and that's gross. I grew up on Metalcore and Djent but I can safely say that they're mostly bad. Of course there's always Shai Hulud and Misery Signals but they're a tier all their own. Industrial is not my thing.
F: Symphonic makes me think of Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir, both bands I can't stand. Deathcore is just not good. I grew up on Christian metal and still listen to Zao, August Burns Red, and Becoming the Archetype. The nostalgia runs deep, but it really is mostly bad. I don't have breath to spare on nu or glam stuff. Pirate metal = Alestorm is sucky but if you want trve Pirate stuff, you need Running Wild (which is heavy/power/speed).

But I do think this oversimplifies a lot of things. Some of the more niche stuff like melodic black or tech death need some love. Also where the hell is speed metal????? Lemmy is rolling over in his grave smh

Technically not metal, but I think this is still probably the best thread for noise rock on the site. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
