The Sopranos is the only show I’ve seen that is on par with the Wire. You should be hopeful!
I would also say Mad Men comes closest behind those two. Deadwood is close as well. Twin Peaks was just an awesome experience and it’s hard to compare it to other shows.

Lol, Twin Peaks is such a batshit crazy (and amazing) show that I can't in good conscious put them in a conversation with any of these other shows. It truly is its' own thing. And that's wonderful.

I'm all in on Clegane Bowl, but it's an even sillier premise in the book considering it's Gregor's body with a different person's head/maybe no head

This is definitely just a side note to that whole scene (and I almost didn’t want to point it out), but it’s also ironic that Sansa said that to The Hound of all people. One of their only scenes together had him saving her from the guys trying to rape her in Kings Landing. That’s just....a weird thing to say to him.

I hope its quick, not into a long drawn out scuffle between two characters i care so little about at this point.

Agreed, I don’t even consider Twin Peaks when thinking about “golden age” television. But it’s astounding.

I need to give Deadwood a watch. After Sopranos, maybe.

And also, like, the hound and arya literally are just leaving from winterfell on horseback - i know this show is so, so, so bad at real-time travel but like, theyre 2 weeks from kings landing...

The Sopranos, The Wire, and Deadwood are definitely the holy trinity for a reason.

Agreed that Twin Peaks is exceptional but almost impossible to categorize alongside anything else.

I think Mad Men is better than The Sopranos, but only because Sopranos came first and basically created the model that Mad Men and all other "prestige tv" was able to rip off. The Sopranos as a whole is amazing, but they fell on their face when it came to some particulars, and when they did they fell pretty hard by today's standards. With Mad Men it's like every little detail was taken into account (one of my favorite things to read after each ep was the "Mad Style" reviews that went through each scene and discussed the minute motifs related to the clothing, body language, and other design choices that I would have never picked up myself)

Also just on the face of it, it seems incredibly more difficult to make a show about 60s advertising interesting (and, as I said, as absurdly visually accurate as it was to the time it takes place in) compared to one about modern day mobsters, so point for Mad Men there as well lol

Sopranos will always be a more important show but Mad Men is more impressive, I s'pose

I made sure to mention that the last two seasons felt like an after thought and like off shoots of the show since it wrapped up in season 3. BB and the Shield both come full circle and feel more complete. In that way, I think they are better but The Wire does rule so I'm good either way.

I feel like this season is just cliff notes of what should be like 2-3 full seasons. Feels like they just got tired of doing the show and decided to wrap it up ASAP.

Just going back to that Americans talk real quick. I know a lot of people online watching in real time complained about season 5. That it was kinda just filler because they knew the ending was the following season and they were already where they wanted to be for that but had to do something. I didn’t feel like that though and it is definitely one of my fave shows. Probably top 4 for me. I haven’t seen the wire or sopranos

Do you remember the one-off plotline when Chris becomes friends with a rapper and Adriana tries to use that to become a producer and make a demo with her ex's shitty post grunge band and Chris beats the shit out of him oh and also the rapper just so happens to have a personal vendetta against Hesh?

    Because I remember

The best modern television show that I have watched all the way through is Mad Men*.

*Disclaimer: I have never seen The Sopranos, The Wire, The Americans, Breaking Bad, new Twin Peaks, LOST, Deadwood, Justified, Dexter, United States of Tara.......

Greatest television show of all time: CHiPs.

You mean a bougie white guy in the 60s got away with sexually assaulting an immigrant? That just doesn’t sound realistic at all.

Also Pete was consistently the most hated character even within the world of the show lol (tho Harry in the later seasons probably tops him)

Did The Sopranos have the objectively best episode previews of any show ever? No, because Mad Men did

When I was younger and had all the free time to watch a lot of stuff it was kinda before this new golden age of TV back when TV was looked at as "lesser than" movies, which I know is dumb. I watched a lot of movies back then.

Come to think of it, the only TV shows I have watched all the way through are Sex and the City, American The Office, Parks and Rec, and Mad Men.
