There's this crazy thing about history since the early 90s where maybe the single most important event to happen in American politics is that Thurgood Marshall's failing health forced him to step down from the Supreme Court while Old Man Bush was president. If he had been able to make it to Clinton's term, Clarence Thomas would've never been on the court, there would have been a 5-4 liberal majority in 2000, and Bush v. Gore would've gone the other way. Things would be so different today if that had happened.
