Man of Steel wasn't terrible, but not a movie I'd voluntarily revisit.

The new one looks bad, but I'll see it anyways and probably enjoy it.

I think people need to start understanding that the character himself is not fertile ground for conflict. At least not on the terms in which people choose to engage the characters. There's a legitimate way, in my mind, to make him frightening and appealing in a way that is interesting. Zack Snyder doesn't really have the talent to do this, though.

I'm confident I'll be entertained. What's up in the air for me is whether it's something I'll want to watch more than once

Pretty much my thoughts on MoS. I think the idea and story is there for them to go down that road, but I just haven't seen it done in an interesting and well executed way yet

  5. I've been saying this for years. Hah, but you have one camp that basically just wants the 50's version of Superman, and they're very vocal die-hard fans, but I don't think that's a movie the masses in 2016 really want to see. The struggle they attempted with MoS was "what do I do with these powers" and all that, but instead it just came off as mopey as hell.

I found the Superman: Earth One arc at least interesting on how they went about telling that kind of story without it feeling too ... depressing. But in so many ways in this current environment the optimism of Superman feels almost, I dunno, too fake? Like how does an audience buy into that with what's going on in the world these days? Maybe just throwing him back in time and making it a period piece from the 60s is the way to go. Don Draper Kent. Ha.

I think the optimism is pretty much what Marvel is doing with Captain America and that's going over well. They have a character that represents naive assumptions about human nature and "American values" and counter that by pairing him with a more cynical character.

I guess I don't understand what it does. Does it make it just disappear from my phone? I usually don't delete emails minus spam. Just curious since it disappears to
    A random
    Place on the Internet.

Could be wrong but I think it stores the email without having the email take up space on your account so you have the email still but it's not clogging up your space.

  15. Basically archive is like putting the files on a shelf somewhere in the closet. They're not in front of you and you're not worrying about them, but you can still go pull one down if you need it. Delete is like the shredder. I basically archive anything that's not spam in case I need to reference it later. So I've got email going back to the early 2000s on Gmail.

Hm, I think a "difficult topic" sub-forum would be needed in general. Definitely a new thread

  19. I think Cap actually represents the opposite of optimism. His cynicism for the government and distrust of those in power has been the catalyst for the best Cap movie and I'm assuming this upcoming one as well. He's willing to break the law in any way needed if he thinks it's right (and it looks like he's defending his murderous friend Bucky in the new one, heh). I think this speaks to people on a level that works, whereas Superman's usually been portrayed as buddy buddy with the police, government, and leaders.

  20. I was talking with I think @lightning13 about the idea of calling like ... "activist" forum? I dunno. It needs a better name. But a place to house the discussions about a lot of these things like race/gender and having a clear delineation that difficult and hard conversations are going to be had.

yeah thats it but its just way more clicks and navigation than it used to be and its not lumped in with the other BNM stuff the way it used to be. it's not as intuitive or prominent as it was on the old design and its weird to me that tracks on the home page are now lumped in with news without much of a distinguishing feature.

and yeah, agree with whoever mentioned that the shift to album reviews being below the fold is kind of a big deal.

I think that'd be the ideal set up. Had also thought about having a header for more serious topics but it's probably better to have it all in a sub forum.

I agree. Essentially, he is meant to represent hope. Instead of this abstract hope, unmediated by the events in the world, it would be good to see him engage the world as it is. What does it mean to represent hope if the current hopes of people are the antithesis of the "American Way"? Their hopes are rooted in an alteration to the normal way of life, eg, not being shot by cops, not being sexually assaulted, etc. That isn't to say that Superman should essentially be a "conscious" movie, but to contextualize his being within a world that is inherently threatening to specific people. I mean, I don't know. I always liked the idea of a black Superman or someone of another race. Then, you could explore the idea of a god-like being that looks like something associated inherently with danger. (Because I think we all know that, if he were a minority, the government would have had him shot with a kryptonite bullet a while ago) Anyway, there's a confusion that persists in which dark aesthetics amounts to complexity and that is what, among other things, is problem. You can have light-hearted stuff and situate your character within this world; you can have hope and symbols and interrogate the nature of both, which makes a more interesting character.

Who really is reading them now? Even on AP I've noticed the review is not as prominent of a thing for awhile.

I think industry is moving towards more news and think pieces as opposed to reviews.

I like reading reviews for the good writers but read op eds for the same thing so I get ya.
