Why give up a high first for a player you don’t intend to extend?

It doesn’t make sense

 

Round 1, Pick 11 - The Cincinnati Bengals Select LB, Devin Bush, Michigan.

LB is a position of need and after testing, Bush looks like the guy here.

Yeah I rejected Clowney for the same reason. Maybe he’s worth a first if you had a couple years of contract left.

But to get only one year, and then you either have to overpay the hell out of him or possibly lose him after that? Definitely not worth a first round pick, especially if the team knows they lack the cap space to give him a lucrative extension. He might even hit free agency because he’s so costly and is due a deal so soon.

It’s not just how good the player is. It’s how long of a commitment you get from them, and whether you can plan for them being part of the team long term. That definitely has a huge impact on trade value - first round picks have the potential draft you fresh all-pro talent on the CHEAP... so no one is gonna trade a first for a player that’s gonna wreck their cap situation.

Only teams with a crazy amount of cap space would pull the trigger on that, and even then they might be rebuilding and might just wanna sit on as many picks as they can acquire.

 

This is nixed. The Vikings have $2 million in cap space and they just had Everson Griffen adjust his contract to keep him around. Otherwise, they already have Danielle Hunter, who honestly isn't that far off from Clowney.

This is why I post about Spotrac in the first post. Check the salary cap and don't just make fantasy trades.

I was gonna wait to take a qb but I felt like it had to be realistic, none of us are gonna realistically trade a bunch of their picks to move up for either of these dudes haha

Like, full stop I would rather have Jawaan Taylor at 6M per year for the next 4 years,

than have Clowney for 1 year and then have to pay him 25M per season or lose him
