i've seen a lot of people complaining about the playoff format (mostly Toronto fans) and how they want it changed asap, but it's super interesting that even if they moved to an NBA or NFL-style order seeding how many matchups are the same and crazy that the Western Conference is the same for all 3 versions!

ironic that Toronto fans barking for change would benefit the most from the change (even though they played like shit against the Islanders in almost all of their games this year but in a 7-game series i'd have to pick Toronto over NYI)

NBA Seeding Format (best to worst by record (points for NHL and then ROW as tiebreaker))

NFL Seeding Format (division winner gets favored even if a WC has a better record than the division winner)

It’s round 2 that makes this format egregiously stupid. It makes it so it’s possible, if not somewhat likely, that the 1st and 2nd seed in each conference play each other in the semis. TB v BOS and CGY v SJ really shouldn’t be 2nd round matchups.

(unless I’m mistaken about how the 2nd round gets seeded. Afaik though it stays intra-division, at least as much as possible.)

 

I recall reading through the possibilities of this playoff format that the only way the second round isn’t an actual divisional matchup is if both wild cards are from the same division and they both win (since obviously then one of the WC’s would play an opponent from the other division)

 

As much as I want bruins to lose, having the isles beat the pens and going further than the leafs would be fun
