It IS a catch 22 and I think most people DONT know what to do with it
On its surface yeah strip clubs are “icky” because they inherently objectify women
We’re only just now acknowledging the other side to that coin, which is women being empowered by exploiting that objectification. After all, it is consensual objectification.
And I’m obviously all for things that involve empowering women to take back the sexual power surrounding their bodies

I just think culturally strip clubs have been coded as sleazy and ‘bad’ , the way most sex work has. And we all still internalize a lot of those messages without questioning why. I think you’re on the right track actually questioning.

Just wanted to add that the whole thing is definitely a huge grey area that will never be black and white, for instance because sex work can be an industry that people are forced into (either literally by a pimp or just feeling like they had no other option due to poverty) which of course makes the “consensual” part of the objectification a bit of a grey area
Couple that with the fact that so many clubs DO exploit their dancers and don’t treat them with respect, and you can’t make blanket statements about strip clubs.
There will always be so many nuances and that just means it’s important to talk about them and think on them instead of defaulting to our knee jerk reaction and our desire to classify everything as black or white

 

We also need to legalize or at the very least decriminalize prostitution but that’s like a whole other conversation

 

This is why I don't really have an opinion one way or another and just default to agreeing with what women think is best

 

And me having never been to a strip club has a lot less to do with being pure and a lot more to do with the fact that the Venn diagram of “wanting to go” and “having money to go” have never overlapped.

I mean, prostitution will never stop, right? We should provide these people with safe avenues to conduct their business. It will pretty much all but remove the existence of pimps and will massively cut down on crime and violence. Prostitution is largely unsafe because it’s illegal and not the other way around. If done through a proper business they could give sex workers a safe place not only to work but could also provide frequent testing. Would also reduce child trafficking to some extent, I’d imagine. Just seems like the way to go

I'm just not sure if it'll actually remove the existence of pimps and trafficking. Idk. If evidence backs it I'm for it but it's not something I'm willing to hardline on because I'm not confident in my knowledge of what the results of decriminalization/legalization will be and am not confident it would cut down on trafficking. If research/examples say otherwise then I'm for legalization but right now I've done no research into the topic.
