I'd venture a good guess he's heard exactly those kinds of "jokes" because he's gay for a good portion of his life.

 

Hard to say "I'm right and one reason is because this didn't happen" when it then happens.

Sure, but as someone that’s had their name made fun of, and used as a slur about my sexuality growing up, it sure doesn’t feel better to be reminded of that. Plus, do you think the best argument to make is “I didn’t mean to offend you in *that* way”? When trying to explain why things hurt people in different ways and how things like “butthurt” can offend, what benefit is there to being the side that doesn’t apologize and try and do better? Do I think people that make fun of me always are attacking my sexuality? No. But when they do it in ways that people absolutely have it brings all of that back.

This seems to walk between being a basic good human and trying not to hurt someone ... and common sense about a gay man to me.

Both sides got precisely what they wanted from that whole Buttchug tweet.

The Chapo dudes want centrists to clutch their pearls so they can then dunk on them.

Centrists want to clutch their pearls at chapo dudes and claim the high ground against Bernie.

And, while I didn’t take the meaning to have been homophobic, I’m sympathetic to the argument that we should be very careful about what language we tolerate around the first real prominent gay candidate. We let stuff slide and actual homophobia is gonna run rampant.

However, insisting on tying that to Bernie from the jump showed me that dude wasn’t operating in good faith at all.

Which is pretty much why Twitter is a dumpster fire. So much of it is performative.
