If you can’t connect with animation, do you not connect with comics, video games, paintings, etc?

Also wanting animation to look as real as possible sucks. Imagine Miyazaki animated like Beowulf or something.

Also animation leads to way more fun action (for the most part) than most superhero movies. I’ll take most animated climaxes (Spiderverse, Big Hero 6) over the live action CGI messes that make up most superhero movie climaxes any day.

Oh animated action moves are > real life action movies all day for the most part. Except when it comes to driving. I love car stunts in action movies haha.

I think that cartoons can be very emotional but most of them don't focus on that and are silly / goofy most the time so it's hard to get "in that mode", whereas actors in drama movies tend to be much more serious and earnest throughout, so they get you to buy in to their emotional storyline more.

 

I was actually about to get back into this conversation anyways, lol

I could never get into comics as a kid or adult, so now that I think about it, it's most likely because of my inability to connect with a human/humanoid/whatever portrayal by a non-human. As far as paintings, that's probably why I connect more with abstract art than realistic art.

I'll correct myself or just make the comment that maybe I don't want it more realistic, it's just that it doesn't work on me in general so I guess leave it alone for other people to enjoy? Idk, it's just not for me.

I can see your point here, but it doesn't come across as better or worse to me, really. It's just there.

The reason I was gonna come back to the animation/emotion conversation is because I was thinking about Her and how even though Samantha doesn't exist as a person in the movies' universe and there's not even a visual representation of her to even try to connect with, they did a great enough of a job creating her as a believable enough person where I still emotionally could attach to her. I'd say if they did make some kind of avatar for her, it would have ruined the movie.

 

I was never into comics as a kid either so when I watch all these MCU/DCU movies i'm like "yeah these are cool" but pretty much know nothing of any of the backstories so i'm not like super invested in how it translated from the comics to the movies and all that jazz

That sounds like an expectation of tone based on medium. Animated movies are like any other movies in that they’re all very different, but if they’re animated, they’re animated for a reason, it’s to tell a story I’m a way that live action visuals can’t capture.

Waking Life, Up, Princess Mononoke, Into the Spiderverse, the Lion King, and Cowboy Bebop are all so unique, to write off animation would be to miss out on so much. It’s everyones prerogative to feel however they do, but I’d feel the same if someone were to say they don’t watch foreign films or listen to hip hop.

 

Also, compare Her to Blade Runner 2049 in that (spoilers ahead)...

One of the reasons why that movie doesn't make as big of an impact I was hoping was because their representation of Joi didn't come off as believable enough to me, even though she was portrayed by a real person but with animated aspects added to her. Like, her "death" scene didn't have any emotional aspect on me but when Samantha and the rest of the AI left at the end of Her, it wrecked me. Two very similar characters but two completely different reactions. Maybe it's just better writing and direction in Her, idk

I don't even really dislike Alfred Blue that much but what I did dislike is in Bill O'Brien's first season as HC he kept insisting on using Alfred Blue when we had a weapon named Arian Foster and we'd be in dire situations where it's OBVIOUS we should be using Foster and BOB would have Blue in EVERY. DAMN. TIME.

 

God damnit I would've given more for Ogbah

 

And then after getting Lamar Miller it all continued and BOB repeatedly insisted on trying to make Alfred Blue a thing
