Randall trades a Caterpie for a Charizard. Calls it a bad deal cause he loses to Blastoise.

Trading Telvin at all is a bad deal unless we can draft another All Pro team leader. I don’t give a fuck what the pick is if we didnt get a player like that to replace him. If we downgrade from Telvin it’s a bad trade regardless what pick we got and used

Nah it'd be like Randall trades a Caterpie for 20 Weedles but it turns out that 1 Caterpie had perfect IVs

No. You’re lirerally just trading a great ball for an ultra ball. Doesn’t matter if you use the ultra ball to catch rattatta

ITS THE POKEBALLS NOT THE POKÉMON. THATS THE TRADE

I mean, yeah if you trade a great ball for an ultra ball then yes, objectively you got the better deal lol

This is just so stupid haha. the Eagles got more value out of one pick than the Browns got out of all those others. And we’re still trying to insist the picks are what matter

Randall is still wrong and Dustin is still right and Max is still pretty and I am still sad. All is how it should always be.

We all get what you're saying but taking it to that level is more than just what that one trade is. Like, I could use your logic to extrapolate and say that if Wentz doesn't eventually win a Super Bowl himself then the trade wasn't good. That's just far too thin to stretch it.

They are, because who they pick is outside of the trade. If we're weighing the value of a trade we don't weigh who the picks are spent on UNLESS that's an explicit component in the trade agreement. (For ex. Eagles moved up to #2 knowing for sure that they would be receiving Carson Wentz.)

Winning the trade =/= being better at drafting or being the better GM

....because thats the trade Randall. A trade is between two teams. Did the Eagles force the Browns to take those players? No. That was independent of the trade.

Trading for picks is nothing but potential and reflecting on pick value alone ignores context and things we learned from hindsight. There is no such thing as an instantaneous snapshot of a good trade before any players see the field. Whether a trade is good or not relies on how it pans out for both teams.

Any other perspective is pretentious bullshit that adds nothing to the discussion.

    The rivalry is back on

If we’re getting real technical, it’s like trading a master ball for 2 ultra balls, 2 great balls, and a poke ball

If you needed the master ball to catch what you were going for, it’s worth having 5 less tries. If you think you can get it with an ultra ball, might as well maximize your shots

Like you can look at one spot on the revenue chart “oh this company made 3M this year! What a deal” but if you look at the graph and it’s a downward slope of losing revenues then that 3M is not a good number at all

Context matters when projecting business moves

Thats not correct. The analogies the rest of us have given you are though!

We're not projecting business moves, we're evaluating the value of 1 trade

You're talking about evaluating the GM as a whole and the strategy as a whole (which has a net result), we're talking about 1 trade

    What about my hypothetical:

"If I sell an item that's worth $10 to someone for $1,000 dollars, then I made out like a bandit regardless of what I spent that $990 on."

A trade between teams is a business move imo haha

It can look good on deal day but then turn out sour. What matters is how it turned out not how it looked at first
