All I could imagine would be a combination of filters on threads with specific names being auto-removed and a generic comment about why it was removed and maybe links to helpful resources and/or a handful of mods specifically to remove threads and educate the OP's, but that's a lot of voluntary work I'm sure.

I'll shut up-- I wasn't trying to say depressed people can't be sad, I'm just saying I PERSONALLY don't experience sadness as a symptom of my depression, and don't think any reference to the concept sadness should be instantly associated with mental health issues and depression. I see it the complete opposite way, as emotional honesty is therapeutic and antithetical to the proliferation and glamorization of depression, but obviously that's not how y'all see it and I respect that. I'll keep my ears open if anyone has anything else to say.

  3. Not for nothing, but a lot of self proclaimed "sad boiz" in the scene use their own legitimate mental illness OR just "sadness" aesthetic as a justification for abusing others which is mostly why it irks me (and no, not just boys do this but yes, this is who I'm talking about at the moment)

That, and the train wreck that is Emo Nite in LA. It's commodifying a social group (emo kids) that from where I sat as a former one, were just trying to embrace their own depression and finding community in that. And sure, that aesthetic has been profited from for years now but in 2019 it just rings false.

I'm sure it's a tough balancing act deciding between allowing a place for people to discuss listening to/seeing these kind of artists on here and outright removing topics about them as taking a stand against them. I guess it's not black and white. I don't know.

Yeah , the venn diagram of people in the scene whose favorite album is Pinkerton and are terrible people is like a flat circle

Its really crazy that every single one of these sells out in Brooklyn and Asbury Park.

  7. They might be better there. But here, what WAS a really fun party for scene kids who grew up has turned into an influencer-laden fashion show/"who's who" event and it just sucks

When the tour was announced all I was focused on is mayday parade, I’m really saddened there is so much more going on on that tour that I didn’t even know about.

Also, it’s just my personal opinion but as someone who’s been depressed since early teens, identifying with sadness is a comfort and also a coping mechanism, same reason why people share suicide idealation memes. I know that profiting off of it is different but I’m not sure where the line really is. As someone who IS a sad girl, I’m not going to feel bad about wanting a shirt that says “sad girls run the world” ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Again entirely my perspective and don’t want to invalidate any other perspectives.

  9. My zesty take: Emo Nite would improve 900% if they stopped hiring event photographers

wrap yourself in petals for armor.

I know one of the guys who runs the emo nite I went to out here (it was on Long Island) and tbh it was fun and small; can't really speak for Brooklyn or the bigger shows. But most of the people that were there were older and legitimately into the music. And everyone was supportive.

Dang. I didn’t know that obviously only have experience with my own local one and the “emo night Brooklyn” traveling one, which had always been loads of fun.
It’s definitely blown up since it first started though which definitely changes the spirit of it all.

I'm very much not emo or part of that subculture so I just don't get the appeal

  17. Out here the spirit is deader than a doornail. Stand in LINE to listen to random people spin the same ten records over $15 well drinks for several hours, watching the ~cool kids~ slap on some eyeliner and seek out the photographers for tomorrow's IG post? I could do that for free, with cheaper drinks and fewer people who bought 15k followers.

I've never had to stand in the line, but it's offensive that it's even an option.

And yes, I'm aware this makes me sound like a cranky old lady. I've accepted it. Live and let live but influencer culture destroys everything in this city.

Regarding the conversation about sadness, sometimes I do get pissed off at how being depressed has oddly become chic online. And how depression memes or "funny" suicidal posts are completely accepted nowadays. And I'll admit that I've participated in them or viewed them and laughed but it makes me hate myself doing it. It still has always bothered me how it's just the normal thing to joke about and that people most likely aren't paying attention to actual cries to help from the people who need it most.

Idk, I got into a spiral over the weekend since I had a day off and just couldn't stop reading a bunch of those kind of memes and I kept going back and forth between relating way too much and then getting mad but kept reading, kept reading, etc... Shit sucks.

There's this "Emo vs. Pop-Punk" night by my place and it's become almost exactly what you're describing. Used to be a neat place to hang on sunday nights and listen to good music while mingling with people in our local music scene. But after awhile I started to not recognize anyone there and it seemed like the "cool people" put on their only black outfit and came only because it was the "place to be" and not because they actually gave a shit about the music. I stopped going a long time ago because of that.

Emo Nite would improve 1000% if it just ceased to exist.

It's way more fun to go to regular bars and play it when no one wants to hear it anyway.

I think it’s a “normal thing to joke about” because it seems like the majority of people in our generation (+/-) suffer from mental illness abundantly.
Cause like if you’re sharing and identifying with sad/depressed memes, it seems pretty likely that you suffer from some kind of mental health issue. I think you’re operating off the assumption that people pass them around just as regular jokes and not because it makes them feel understood and not alone.
Like to me it seems obvious people posting them are using them as a coping mechanism.
It’s totally not everyone’s cup of tea of humor, but I surely hope you don’t hate yourself over it. There’s nothing wrong with finding humor in life’s darkness, but there’s also nothing wrong with not relating to the humor aspect of it!
