Just watched the White Right documentary that focused primarily on members of the National Socialist Movement who made up a significant part of the Charlottesville protest (Deeyah Khan was already doing the documentary and her team were the only outsiders the Nazis allowed to join), though I don’t believe they were the tiki torch guys.

And god, it’s always good to get reminded every once in a while that all of the cliches about white nationalists are ultimately true. Basically all of them are some combination of ignorant, an imagined sense of feeling victimized by a general group, traumatized / clearly mentally ill (so many were vets), and isolated (obviously in terms of never actually interacting with people of other races, but also personally; for many of them it was clear that they joined the movement more as a social activity than as political action). Whenever they’d interview individuals I felt more pity than anger or disgust. She would ask them some really basic questions about their ideology and they would sit there completely perplexed and unable to answer. It definitely seemed like most of them never actually stay dedicated to the cause for that long. Either they get burnt out and just stop participating, have some moment of clarity and leave, or end up committing awful hate crimes that end with either prison or their own death.

It’s “humanizing” not in the sense that I feel sympathy for them or would ever use those things to justify their thoughts and behavior, but in the very basic, literal sense that it reminds me that they are humans who go through the same shit as anyone else, but sadly they just take it out in horrific, unexcusable ways. Like I said, this all seems cliches and obvious, but I feel like simply thinking/knowing it is different from actually emotionally feeling it, which is rare these days. It also just made me sad in that once these guys get involved with this stuff (the ideal would obviously be for them to never get involved in the first place), it really seems impossible to get them to abandon it as a group — that converting them can only be done individually. Like, I don’t think there’s any better or easier way to deal with them at that point.

Khan also has a documentary on Netflix about jihadist extremism which I imagine will be pretty similar. Gonna watch it tomorrow. Thank you for entertaining my rambling.

I somehow missed that original post @Kiana (that they quoted) but girl...exact same. I don’t have cable anymore but when I lived at my ex’s I almost exclusively watched investigation discovery channel. It’s one of those networks you can leave on 24/7 and be immersed the whole time haha

When we aren't watching kids shows we have ID on constantly. We like to refer to them as "murder shows"

Hopefully our kids don't end up serial killers

Eh, I turned it off half way through episode three. Honestly Don’t know if I’ll come back to it. It’s an interesting story no doubt, but I already feel like there are mounds of filler and this could have been condensed down to 2-4 episodes.

I was kind of bored to tears for long stretches several times.

Wow, already limiting their possibilities. I guess kids aren’t allowed to “be anything they want” these days, smh.

  14. Update:

Season 2 of Queer Eye didn’t really do it for me. It wasn’t on the same level as season 1. Season 3 is as good as season 1.

    I’ve been crying for hours.

Fine they can be serial killers then. Wouldn't want to be that parent

I was kind of side-eyeing that couple in the first episode of QE, with their Blue Lives Matter shirt and NRA hat (they’re from a pretty deep red area near here). But I really hope that the guys at least opened up their worlds a little bit.

They seem pretty open to me. She did talk a bit about stricter gun control and what not which surprised me

Anyone see Love Death and Robots yet? Looks pretty cool, hadn't heard of it until I saw it suggested on my Netflix today. From the guys who made Fight Club and Deadpool

I've watched a couple episodes. They're all short and look pretty well made. Enjoyed the first two stories.

Only have 2 episodes of Queer Eye left and I'm kinda sad about it already being over.

I had BBQ for dinner thanks to the Jones sisters.

The Elrod family episode got to me because one of my biggest fears is getting cancer/dying young in general and leaving behind my family so it just scares me a lot.

All the praise and wonderful things being said about QE are making me consider watching it. I don't really do reality programs, so I've largely just ignored it until now.

I stopped by my folks today and my mom had it on but wasn’t really watching it. Her quote was “I wanted something simple on as background noise while I cleaned the house but even for that this seems too boring and dumb.”

    :crylaugh:

My mom’s always been hard to impress.
