Yeah, I always have a weird feeling with how so many people enjoy watching these kind of documentaries or series on HBO and Netflix, etc... myself included. I wonder what it taps into mentally for so many people to be interested in subjects like this.

Did anyone ever watch The Missing on Starz? That show was bananas. Two seasons, both seasons told completely different stories (fictional) about missing children.

Now that I have my own kids, stuff like this is hard to stomach, but it's still so interesting (and obviously heart-wrenching).

I always hope that a major documentary or large-scale interest will lead to information solving the case and bringing closure for the family or whatever possible justice can be served in the present day. People absolutely have an urge for things to make sense and have answers so it never surprises me that stories like this have such a hold on the masses.

I do worry about how much the recent true crime boom has commodified them even more than they were previously. I don’t have a problem with bringing the public into a story, but some of the recent ones really play up the entertainment angle over the actual case and people involved.

  4. Personally don't find true crime appealing when there's stuff like Hannibal, Fargo, and True Detective out there, but maybe it's because I've only seen a couple episodes of Dateline or whatever.

This has been on my watch list for a long time, but apparently the filming of this documentary led to a man being freed from prison for a murder he didn't commit:

I mean I’m definitely referring to way more than just national level news. Like where I live the Tampa bay Times is the big newspaper and it of course had it all over the front page. That’s not a newspaper that’s availbke nationally by any means BUT it definitely covers more than just local stuff. If your paper only covered local stuff I could understand but if it had any kind of national news at all, it would be surprising to not have heard of it.

Also I distinctly remember there being billboards on interstates and stuff. Like you just couldn’t avoid seeing her face, I felt like.

Ian she’s not murdered she’s missing!

What are you implying, fine murdered or kidnapped or whatever

Amanda Knox scared me so much because she was almost in prison for life for being awkward and in the wrong place at the wrong time

Haha I’m not implying anything I just don’t want to speak of her like she’s dead I’d rather be optimistic that she’s alive somewhere.

Also yeah but I’m still not 100% sold on her innocence even after watching the Netflix doc.

The specifics of that were the total disappearance, which I think is what they’re getting at here. It is kind of semantics I guess at this point, but the question of whether it was murder or an accident covered up or a kidnapping or a complete accident or something else were all discussed. It’s a little different from some of the other big cases where the mystery is who did it, not what was done.

  10. I've never heard of this case either. I think if you took a poll of 100 people, the majority would not remember.

And there's no way I think Amanda Knox is 100% innocent lol

I wonder how big a difference there would be between people who know the case by name and people who have seen the iconic picture at some point.

What's the iconic picture? I did a Google image search and none of them looked familiar.

The first one that shows up on Google, with her looking straight at the camera. You can see the unique markings on her eye really clearly and that was talked about a lot.

  16. Looks like it's on Prime. I bought the box set a few months ago, though. Been meaning to rewatch.

Prime I think has my current favorite lineup of shows. So many things that aren’t anywhere else. I wish they had the Big C, in forever annoyed that Showtime doesn’t have it anymore.

They have a ton of stuff ranging from super old classics to originals for the platform. The current one I’m on is The Americans, and it went from being totally off my radar to one of my favorite shows of all time just in the past few months. I’d also definitely recommend The Prisoner, Boston Legal, the BBC Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, any of the HBO classics, and I’ll have to think about some more.

They also just added The Practice which I have been wanting to watch in full for like ten years and it has never been available anywhere from what I could find. I’m stoked for that.
