Like, they recently worked out a deal two years ago in my county that would increase your pay every year by 3% if you were deemed highly effective, which sounds great, but it’s incredibly hard to get highly effective because you have to:

    A) have your students average a 3 or higher on their Florida assessments
    B) show growth in student learning; so if a kid got a 2 on the FSA in fourth grade, you need that kid and a good chunk of others to achieve a higher score when they test at the end of fifth grade
    C) have your administration give you positive marks on a very long and convoluted rubric that they use to assess the quality of your teaching during various classroom observations for that year

So basically, fewer people get highly effective now because the administration’s assessment of your performance throughout the year accounts for 1/3 of your overall “teacher score”, and admins are probably being pressured by the superintendent to be more critical in their evaluations so as to dissuade them from handing out more raises. More people were getting highly effective in the years before I entered the field, and they suddenly made it very difficult to get consistent raises as they favored an evaluation method that highly favors results from your students, which could send us into a long debate over the ethics/merit of state assessments for students.

Strikes were against the law in WV and OK and they still did it and got themselves some raises. I think TX and FL have too many people to be able to organize a statewide strike but maybe by county or district. I know the fear is that you'll be replaced but by the looks of it the school boards/gov cave every time because they need you.

oh yeah the ol "I give you a raise if you're a good teacher*

*good teacher means doing more work than you're responsible for, having students get better grades than possible for them and also being at least 7 ft tall.

I’d think that strikes could be a possibility in Florida and I’d be willing to join if a movement started. I’m in a pretty privileged district with a lot of teachers that have been adopted into certain programs that don’t exist for new teachers due to their seniority. They make up a bulk of the educators for my area, but in a few years the largest group of teachers will likely be made up of teachers like me who entered within the last 10 years when these programs/benefits started to get cut around the county, and the school board will have to decide to cave to the pressure put on by us to reinstate them or risk a possible strike.

Tomorrow is a fun day for us though! Last day before spring break, so we do a day long celebration with crafts, snacks, a movie, and *gasp* a little more than our 20 minutes of mandated recess time. Lol but yeah staying up late most nights is probably contributing to my burn out

I’m sure you could take an alternative route towards becoming a teacher. You could use your background working in tech to teach elementary age children coding. Our tech teacher is beloved by pretty much the whole school and he doesn’t have to worry about testing.

I don't think I can afford to be a teacher in Austin area. My wife is a counselor and to live here we need a higher 2nd income. Especially since her student loans are going to be outrageous when she's done with school

Shit, yeah I pay about 350 each month right now and if my wife wasn’t making more than I am, we would be screwed.

Not sure what her payments are going to look like but I'm expecting between 350and 500. Gonna suck.

But hopefully we can get both kids in public school which will save us $1500 a month!

    Nice. That's awesome.

I've got kind of a similar thing.

When I was interviewing after I graduated I interviewed at a place after a job fair. The first interview was just kind of like a meet and great and see if you're a 'good fit' for the company. So they schedule a 2nd interview for a week later.

2 days before my 2nd interview I got a call from the company they asked me some info about my GPA and what classes I took specifically and stuff like that. Hang up and 20 kin later I get an email saying "thanks but no thanks, GPA is too low" so that sucks.

I decide to just go to the 2nd interview anyway because I didn't have anything else scheduled and I needed interviewing practice anyway. I go to the 2nd interview and I'm more relaxed because the pressure kinda got taken off because I already didn't get the job. Interviewer obviously likes me and my answers, I can be charming and mildly funny in person. I don't mention the email saying that they don't want me. They ask about my GPA and say it's lower than they were looking for and recommendation letters could help. So I get those and a week later I get an offer. 3 months later I start working there for 5.5 years before I am put out to pasture.
