    Fun must be always. Prestigious

I didn’t realize someone re-made toontown and I am so hyped to try that out tomorrow.

As if Metacritic is a good measure of anything. Score aggregators are troublesome and I'm glad a small number of gaming websites have decided to get rid of their number review system.

It’s flawed but also as close to an “objective” measure we have

...you can't actually be serious with that can you? You think each review of 600-1000 words which explains various shortcomings and achievements can be summed up by a binary "this is good/this is bad" score?

There's a reason why there are so many anomalies when it comes to critic scores and audience scores. The amount of examination that goes into them are wildly different. I get from a basic idea of "I'm in a hurry, let me check the scores" but it completely takes away any nuances. It's a shallow system.

1-10 or 1-100 is not “good or bad” lol

And yeah Matcritic is reductive, but it’s also something similar to an expert study, which as you probably know is a common and accepted way of researching things. Is it THE truth, if that even exists? No. But it’s a solid basis of discussion.

I don't agree. I've seen so many people, from publishers/developers alike, that talk about how consumers are influenced by seeing a 7 rating and writing the game off because it's not a 9 or a 10. A 7 isn't a bad score, a 7 is usually a "good", but people clamor for "perfection/masterpiece" and become highly dismissive of things that aren't. It's doing more to devalue works than support them. There's an certain importance in playing things and watching things that do things differently and maybe do one or two things really well, but fall flat in the third act (for example) but people are going to miss stuff like that and valuable experiences by seeing 7.6 rating and just scoffing at it.

The whole thing about it becoming a discussion is a different side of the same coin, I think. It allows, like right now, for us to have a candid and interesting look at things and perhaps specific games, but I'm curious how far that discussion actually reaches in terms of the community or just the general video game consumer.

An example I'm curious about is a game like Kirby Star Allies from what I read and played got lower ratings due to its lack of challenge and such and that's a 7.3/7.4 game. But I also think that game is really great at introducing a lot of easy concepts for platforming and teamwork that kids would enjoy and would be a good entry point for a lot of them. I would just hate to see it entirely written off because of older Nintendo fans want another Kirby's Return To Dreamland or people just seeing that score and saying "well, Breath Of The Wild/Super Mario Odyssey got a 10, this game must not be any good then."

(I just realized I keep referencing Nintendo games and I was just going to use ARMS as an example as well. Must have Switch on the brain today.)

Here's a strange aside: but did anyone see the videos of people who played Apex Legends on their iPhones with the new remote play function? It's hilarious.

I don't disagree with this. I do however think that the general public misrepresenting information, in this case by interpreting a 7 as not good, doesn't mean that that 7 doesn't still mean what it means. It's still somewhat reliable measure and a solid basis, even if people then misunderstand it. Do you know what I'm saying?

I mean, I get it, I like plenty of games that don't have the best scores, and I notoriously dislike a lot of games that have amazing scores ( Naughty Dog).

I do see that. I'm struggling to think of a better solution and I guess that's half of the problem right there.

I do think that the general state of video game criticism is slightly problematic (too many high scores, too much hype and group think, too many people bamboozled by realistic graphics, too many people that don't even remotely understand the technology), but we don't have much else to work with lol

  15. I mean we are talking about the system that gave us a 97 average score for RDR2, one of the worst playing games I’ve ever seen.

But it's Rockstar and it's beautiful so gameplay doesn't matter.

  17. I get that of course games are more then a sum of their parts, but literally the highest rated game of this gen has below average gameplay.

That’s just weird. Like sure give it a 90+ but COME ONNNNNN

but caring about metacritic and people using the word “perfect” is a waste of time imo, time that could be spent fucking gaming

For real, it’s always too serious in here! Play and talk about games. Who gives a crap what anybody rates a game? Play what looks good and if it’s bad, move on!

  24. I think talking about the industry and game criticism at large is as much part of it as the playing itself. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
