Yaaaay, I figured she had to be but I haven’t seen pics. I’ve worked with her at Dragon Con a bunch and she’s always so great.

Nope, just DC. I’m in Virginia now, but I started going when I lived in Asheville. That was about a decade ago and now it’s just a pilgrimage.

    So assuming that this weekend...

    Captain Marvel Review

Captain Marvel’s biggest success is that it delivers new things to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Obviously, the first of these is finally delivering a female superhero in to lead her own film. However, the film succeeds in doing more than just delivering a kickass female superhero to serve as inspiration to millions. The way in which the film presents Captain Marvel to its audience is also unique in the MCU landscape.

The film follows Brie Larson, known by her Kree name as Vers, as she struggles what it means to be human after a mysterious event in her past wiped her memory. She was given power by the Kree, a race of “noble warrior heroes” interlocked with an endless war against the shape-shifting Skrulls. On Earth Brie teams up with Nicholas Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to stop the Kree (lead by the utterly talented Ben Mendelsohn) from spreading on Earth and while doing so inadvertently discovering her former life. The film does not follow a straight narrative structure. It features flashbacks to her former life as Carol Danvers, which allows the audience to discover Captain Marvel’s past along with her.

It’s in the back and forth between Larson and Jackson that the film shines the most. Larson delivers stinging one-liners, obviously aware that she is far stronger than any of the Earth beings around her yet fair enough to see what they have to say. She simultaneously delivers comedy to the screen while maintaining the serious attitude a soldier by herself on a foreign planet would portray. The two actors bounce playful banter back and forth that keeps the story light and builds a connection between their characters.

Set in 1994, the film relies on digital de-aging technology Jackson already seen on Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America: Civil War. The computer technology used to de-age Jackson works perfectly. It is done so well that it never takes the viewer out of the moment of experiencing the film. On the whole, the film's digital effects are just as good as what would be seen in any Marvel film released in the past two years.

The film’s weakest points lie in the first and last 15 minutes of the film. Taking a page out of the Guardians of the Galaxy playbook, the film starts off in space. Viewers are thrust straight into the planet Hala, the home of the Kree, as we see Larson train and partake in a Kree military mission. However, those around her keep giving her the same critique - to control her emotions - and it gets very repetitive. The film’s ending is a little anticlimactic, lacking the big villain showdown seen in superhero films.

However, these critiques aside, Captain Marvel is still a success. As Captain Marvel, Brie Larson conveys an aura of confidence, strength, and style necessary to pull off the comic version of Carol Danvers in film form. Larson is a pilot, a human, a Kree, a warrior, and a woman all rolled into one. To the chagrin of many of her critics, she doesn’t smile much - but she doesn’t need to. She knows that she’s the best and she’ll do things her way. It would be difficult to think of a stronger message to send to the young women of this world.

Despite some issues with the story’s plot, Captain Marvel successfully delivers easily one of the strongest superheroes in the Marvel cannon to a world that needs her badly. When she appears in Avengers Endgame she won’t look out of place. Without missing a beat she’ll slot in seamlessly.

I want this to do well because I think with the right director (like Taika Waititi with “Thor”) it could be awesome. But I thought this was about as average of an origins story you can get with a Marvel movie. Pretty much everything is safe choice, down to its choice of music from the ‘90s.

Brie is good, but isn’t given much to do. Samuel L. is always reliable and Goose is a fun little character.

That said, I hope people do get inspired by it and these incels going against throw themselves into a river of fire. Like any first Marvel movie, it lays the groundwork for some hopefully better sequels.

    Non-spoiler first reactions:

    1. Brie Larson is AMAZING. She is quick witted and just a treasure. I can’t wait for her interactions with the other avengers.
    2. The back and forth between Fury and Danvers makes the movie.
    3. Maria Rambeau is a total badass.
    4. Soundtrack is great. There’s some other songs I would’ve liked to see, but ultimately they came later in the 90s and wouldn’t have made sense.
    5. Per typical marvel, you’ll want to stay for both end credit scenes.
    6. I liked what they did and didn’t adapt from the comics.
    7. There is a Fury quip about Goose that made me laugh so hard.

Overall, not my favorite origin, but I love the character and can not wait for End Game. 8/10

Iron Man is the only Marvel origin film that is really strong on it’s own and I think that’s because the MCU wasn’t big enough where the focus was on the future instead of the film itself.

Would you agree that this film suffers from trying to lay too much groundwork for the futire? I’ve read that the end is all about the future instead of satisfyingly closing the story.

Where does this film fall in relation to the first CA and Thor films respectively? Better? In between?

I know those two were pretty underwhelming intros for me but they were reedeemed in later films (Winter Soldier, Ragnarok), so I'm okay if Captain Marvel doesn't get everything 100% right in the beginning while still being established

Captain Marvel establishes its main character and the tone she'll carry much better than the first Thor did. Captain America: The First Avenger was a better period piece and makes the audience more emotionally invested in its characters.

This! I definitely place Captain Marvel between Thor and Captain America as far as origin stories go. The best part about Thor was Loki.
