I mostly lurk here, with good reason: I don't usually have anything to add that hasn't already been said, or I don't know enough to chime in. But as a white cis male just going through life without ties to the music industry (beyond not being able to live without music), I feel like I've learned a heck of a lot from this. From learning who the shitty musicians are to why it's important to truly care about not only their actions, but also about who those actions hurt or impacted.

What I'm trying to say is, from the bottom of my heart, thank you to all of you in here spreading "the good word." And thank you to Jason for letting this even be a thread. You've all opened my eyes in the best ways possible and I look forward to lurking for many years to come.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it a million more times. Being a good friend means holding your friends accountable and not letting them get away with whatever and blindly defending their every action. That’s actually being a bad friend.

I know this was intended to be a compliment but I want you to consider that he actually has the right idea. That as a cis straight white guy it’s 100% ideal to sit back and simply listen in conversations like this one (instead of putting in two cents)
It’s not to say people can’t give theirs of course. Just that in conversations about abuse and sexism and what we’re covering, it’s important to leave more space for the oppressed people (in this case: women, victims, etc)

 

For sure, wasn’t trying to say his opinion was needed everywhere. It just seemed if he’s smart enough to lay low and listen in and take in most of the convo, he’s probably got a good enough understanding to have some good insight across the whole website.

The point is that people will often stop at criticism of music instead of on the overarching problem. It's just not productive.

Re: Better Off, thank you for bringing them up. I was pretty unaware of them and today saw they are opening for a show I’m supposed to be going to. After reading posts, I’ve decided to go to a different show.

 

The absolute worst part of Vince killing Razzle is that he never tried to change his behavior after, he got busted for DUI twice since. He also beat an ex-girlfriend. Point is, fuck Vince Neil.

I'm really conflicted by the Michael Jackson stuff, I've been reading that the doc isn't too credible and uses very few sources. Anyone have any good material to look into?

 

What kinds of sources are you looking for? Nobody disputes that MJ slept in the same bed with these boys, with nobody else in the room, repeatedly. The only person who can speak to what happened in that room is the boys themselves, who are now men. It’s not meant to be a doc about MJ, it’s meant to be a doc about these two men and the long-term effects of child sex abuse. I found it all very credible. He didn’t interview anybody from MJ’s estate because none of them were in those bedrooms, either, and would have nothing credible to add to the conversation at all.

I 100% believe the victims and think it's super shitty that people are spreading around literature in an attempt to discredit them. Questlove sent this shit out before the doc aired and hasn't spoken on it since. Pretty stupid:

I'd advise you to just watch the doc and evaluate the entire situation for yourself.
